CHAPTER 17

“I did it!” Razielle exclaimed and rushed over when she saw me exit the pod. “I sent that bastard straight to hell!”

“I always knew you could,” I said, hugged her, then looked for Erik and Nym.

“What about you?”

“I made definite progress. Not quite the victory you got, but I’m nearly there.”

“What did I tell you? Today’s the day. We should celebrate.”

“I’d love to,” I said, grabbing my phone from the locker and slinging my backpack over one shoulder. “But I can’t tonight. It seems Devon has made plans for us.”

“Ooh, a romantic evening…” Razielle said, mockingly. “Tomorrow night then. I won’t take no for an answer.”

“Sure thing.”

The remainder of our friends joined us outside my pod as more students squeezed by. Erik had a satisfied look on his face, though he wasn’t jumping with excitement as Razielle had been. Nym was as even-tempered and unreadable as ever.

“So?” Razielle asked, impatiently.

Erik’s face broke into a radiant smile. “Success,” he said, smugly.

We all congratulated him before Razielle moved her attention to Nym, but she didn’t repeat the question. “Are you okay?” she asked.

“Just peachy,” Nym replied, sounding very much like our typically sardonic roommate.

“No worse, right?” I asked, trying to lessen her disappointment to share.

“No better, no worse.”

“Then I call this a good news day,” I said and wrapped an arm around the vampire elf, who tensed severely at my touch. But she didn’t shove me away. I gave her a squeeze then let her go, not wanting to push my luck.

We all went back to our respective rooms to get ready to dinner, though I wouldn’t be joining the group at the cafeteria. I was going to meet Devon in the village square for our romantic dinner under the stars—that was, if the clouds dispersed.

And to make the romantic evening complete, I’d be the third wheel because the dinner also included Clara Long, the Divination TA and Devon’s ex-girlfriend. Devon had mentioned us all going out sometime at the beginning of the trimester, but when a few weeks went by without another word about it, I thought I’d dodged the bullet. Perhaps he’d come to his senses, or he wasn’t actually serious to begin with. It seemed I was wrong on both counts.

I didn’t want to go, but I also didn’t want them spending a dinner alone together, either. The test—or attack—on our relationship was still in full effect.

The three of us left the dorm room together. Even though I dreaded my upcoming meal, Nym looked the least excited for dinner.

“Why didn’t Devon pick you up like usual?” Razielle asked as we passed through the lounge, the fire in the hearth bright and crackling.

“We just decided to meet at the restaurant,” I said with a shrug, as if it was no big deal. I couldn’t bring myself to tell her the real reason… not yet.

However, with as skeptical as the Nephilim was, she shot me a look to show she didn’t believe me, but she didn’t press the issue. I
