A Well

12

Samantha woke up with the sun and with excitement rising in her chest. She felt like she was going to burst so she threw the covers off and got dressed. She swallowed her breakfast with minimal chewing, packed her backpack, and went off to meet Ian in record time.

To her surprise, Ian and Sasha were already waiting for her just inside the tree line.

“I could barely sleep last night!” said Ian. “I did some research on the Saez brothers and no one else found the journals.”

“I know!” Samantha practically yelled with enthusiasm. “I found the same thing. That one guy mentions the mission.”

“But it didn’t sound like he visited it,” interrupted Ian.

“Yes, exactly!” Samantha fired back. They were walking so fast their feet were barely touching the pine needles and leaves that covered the forest floor.

Sasha could feel the excitement radiating off them and kept jumping or running up ahead. She didn’t understand what was going on, but she was happy that everyone else was happy.

When they arrived at the mission, everything was perfectly still and quiet. There was no sign or sound of Gerard. Samantha and Ian stopped and looked at each other with raised eyebrows.

Where was Gerard?

They looked around and didn’t see him. Samantha walked to the front door which was standing open and knocked on the rock frame. “Gerard? Hello?” she called out.

“What if he found the treasure and took off without us?” whispered Ian.

“Gerard wouldn’t do that,” Samantha said laughing. Gerard reminded her of her father in a lot of ways, and her father was a very good man. “Gerard wouldn’t be dishonest like that.”

She called out again, “Gerard?”

And then they heard a moan coming from the library room. They ran in to find Gerard lifting his head off the desk and yawning. It looked like he had slept there all night. His hair seemed to be fighting with itself and some of the ink had transferred to his cheek.

Ian and Samantha both laughed at him and Sasha greeted him by pushing her head into his hand. Gerard scratched the wolf’s head and responded with a sleepy chuckle. He said, “I need a shower.”

“But you don’t have a shower,” said Samantha.

“The waterfall. I use the waterfall as my shower,” said Gerard. He stumbled out the front door and seemed to stand more upright as he walked. Sasha stayed behind and settled into the corner for a morning nap.

“Should we wait for him?” asked Ian.

“Nah, he can tell us if he found anything when he gets back,” Samantha said. She pulled out the notebook and began to dutifully take notes on her research. She re-wrote the original poem word for word. They dug into their studies with renewed vigor.

About ten minutes later, a wet, clean, and awake Gerard walked into the library.

“I found bupkis last night,” said Gerard.

“What’s bupkis?” asked Samantha.

Gerard laughed a deep belly laugh. “You know, bupkis. Nothing, zilch, nada. Bupkis!” Gerard was certain he hadn’t laughed out loud in years. It felt good.

“Oh,” she said.
