Happiness

Lashien showed up at Ingruf’s home at midnight, in her alabaster robe, when they’d said they’d meet. Yet even though she knocked on the door, and thought she heard someone moving inside, no one opened. She feared she’d gotten excited over nothing, if Ingruf and Hycis had decided to rescind their offer to assist her.

The waterfalls in the lagoon lulled her into paradise. Mosquitoes and fireflies buzzed on the walkways and wharfs. The guildhall of the Sages of the Peacock would have been the perfect haven to raise her son. She should have listened to Raze, earlier, and asked them to bring her to this place instead of Voltucique. Perhaps Cione wouldn’t have been slighted, since she’d still be devoted to her.

“Lashien-cio.” Hycis cracked the door, and smiled, but didn’t open it fully. “Are you ready for your first adventure in the dream realm? Thrilling, isn’t it?”

“I am…” She didn’t know what to make of the elf yet. If she’d not gotten to know Merethyl, she might have thought it odd for someone to act servile without reason. But she supposed elves did follow different paths in life, so they could afford to show greater compassion and weakness. “Can I come inside?”

“Ingruf’s in a state of undress, and she’s preparing your temporary sleeping quarters. If you’d wait a moment or two, she’ll have it ready soon.” Hycis beamed at her, glanced back inside, and grimaced. “Just a moment.”

“I don’t mind seeing her naked.” Lashien smiled at the elf to gauge her reaction. “And there are mosquitoes out here, which might bite me if you don’t let me inside. Do you want them to bite your fellow guild member?”

“They bit me.” Hycis shrugged. “You’ll get used to it, but if you experience any fatigue or fever afterwards, you’ll want to see the healer. It’s rare for someone to die from the diseases they carry, but they will have you bedridden for—“

“Open the door.” Lashien placed her hand on the wood. “I definitely don’t mind seeing anyone naked, if I can avoid dealing with diseases. I have a purpose. I can’t die.”

“Thought you might…” Hycis scratched her ear, then she let go off the door, so she could enter if she wished.

The elf didn’t have her fooled. She was nothing like Merethyl, who’d welcomed her inside her home when she’d been beaten and bruised. It seemed Hycis just wanted to keep Ingruf to herself, and she’d go to any length to accomplish her goal. Lashien hadn’t planned to steal her either, merely enthrall her and use her to her advantage. She didn’t give a shit if she had to enthrall them both.

“Lashien-cio, I’m setting up your hammock.” Ingruf hung it between two hooks on opposite walls, while dressed in no more than a brown cloth around her waist. An excessive amount of tattoos sat on her chest, back, and stomach.

Hycis hadn’t outright lied at least, but why had it taken them this long to get ready? What had they been doing? What was that strange perfume in the air?

“Thank you.
