Ki Lim and Hum Lo watched from the bridge as the Blood Maiden swept toward the Diogenes. Two smaller trawlers sailed several hundred meters away, one on each side of the Blood Maiden.
"Cut the engines!" Hum Lo ordered. Another sailor spoke rapidly into the intercom to the engine room.
Hum Lo plucked the radio mouthpiece from its cradle and raised it close to his mouth.
"Maintain speed until you're past the yacht," he instructed the captains of the two smaller trawlers. Ki Lim quietly raised a set of powerful binoculars to his eyes and brought them into focus.
The name of the yacht, Diogenes, was painted on the bow, and an American flag rippled at the stern. A middle-aged man with graying hair emerged from the stateroom. He was unarmed. Walking to the side of the yacht, he stared curiously across the water separating the Diogenes from the Blood Maiden, then he raised his arm and waved.
Ki Lim lowered the binoculars, an insistent smile playing across his lips.
"There will not be any resistance, Great Leader," he said. "It appears they think this is a friendly call. The yacht is American. Americans are so naive. Innocent. Like children."
"Reverse engines!" Hum Lo shouted to the crew. Again a sailor quickly repeated the order into the intercom. Hum Lo reached for the binoculars. "Let me see," he said. He searched the deck of the Diogenes. Two more people emerged from the stateroom and joined the older man on the deck. Both were blond. One was a woman.
"We have a rare fish before us, brother," Hum Lo said enigmatically, curling his bushy eyebrows. He invited Ki Lim to look through the binoculars again. "A blond woman. How wonderful!" Ki Lim exclaimed. "But, Great Leader, you realize that in all likelihood she will have blue eyes, too."
Hum Lo smiled. "But she has yellow hair, not black like the whore you have taken. It's not the same. This one will be my pleasure, and mine alone." "It is as you wish, Great Leader." Ki Lim bowed slightly to Hum Lo. "A great victory deserves great rewards."
Hum Lo nodded with satisfaction and moved toward the door. "I will board this yacht personally with the men of the Red Vengeance. Will you join me, brother?"
Ki Lim took one last lingering look through the binoculars at the beautiful woman on the American yacht. He wanted her for his collection.
He vowed to have her.
TED AND DREW STEVENS watched from the deck of the Diogenes as the bow of the Blood Maiden loomed above them, several dozen meters away. "My God, look at the design painted on the bow of that ship!" Ted exclaimed. "It's incredible. I've never seen anything like it. It'd be worth a fortune in San Francisco."
The face and upper torso of a bare-breasted woman flowed back along each side of the hull of the Blood Maiden, coming together at the bow. She had great red eyes and spewed fire as if it were a waterfall of blood. Her black hair was swept back, and painted into it were long streamers of seaweed and small shark-toothed fish.
