CHAPTER 9 - SARANTOS

When Sarantos left his town for distant Australia, he held on to two images in his mind: that of Eleni, his mother, looking at him with eyes brimming over with tears, full of love and despair to be losing him, who knows for how many years still, and that of his one love, Melina, who had waved him off at the bus station without any visible trace of emotion, despite what had taken place between them as if she had expunged every trace of their coming together, confronting him just like anyone else, someone she knew, but a stranger to her heart. He knew that the open wound in his soul would bleed for a long time. The love of a life could not be forgotten from one moment to the next; the moments of passion of the highlight of a dream could not be erased with the painful, extremely painful, rejection he had faced the very next day. The woman of his life may have shattered him with her unpredictable behaviour, but he wanted to keep the memory of that night alive in his mind. His senses, independent of his male pride that dictated he should ignore and forget her, arbitrarily converted the memory of that evening into the only real, the only honest thing that he had ever managed to get from Melina until then; the offer of her body and her passionate sexual response to him. Or was he fooling himself in order to be able to endure her merciless blow? Whatever the truth was he was not in a position to handle it at this moment; neither with his soul, nor with logic. The only option for him was to organize his life to help his mother financially, and from a position of power now to impose conditions on his alcoholic father regarding his treatment of Eleni, otherwise Sarantos would take the whole family with him to Australia and let his father die alone. He had to make money by making every possible sacrifice so that his ambition and good intentions would not turn out to be but empty dreams.

As soon as he arrived in Australia he didn’t want to rest for even a moment after the endless sea trip. He immediately asked for a job. After this he did everything: he swept floors, he cleaned, he organized the store orders, he served at table and at night he studied intently to be able to enroll at university.

Every day he improved his English, not only by attending classes, but by begging those around him not to speak to him in Greek. He needed to practice his English and not to resurrect his Greek.

He slept for only three or four hours a day but physical weariness wasn’t enough to overcome him. He didn’t intend to be the poor village boy for ever, without qualifications, without money and a permanent employee, even of his kind-hearted relatives. He wanted to get ahead, to stand out, and to become important.
