Wasabis Hot Issue: Breaking GPL Violates SarbOx

Wasabi Systems is trying to make violations of the General Public License a federal case. The company believes that breaking the GPL constitutes a violation of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002.
But legal experts disagree— including an attorney for the Free Software Foundation, author of the GPL—and characterize Wasabis claim as gross exaggeration.
"Violating the GPL, for pub-he companies and those which seek to become public, is now a federal crime," said Jay Michael-son, vice president and general counsel of Wasabi, which develops and markets Wasabi Certified BSD, its flagship embedded operating system that competes with Linux. In a white paper published in January, Michael-son asserts that by committing such violations, companies are unable to prove knowledge of their IP assets, and thereby violate Sarbanes-Oxley also known as SarbOx or SOX.
