Somehow, being here made everything both better and worse.

Ariel stood at the window in the bedroom, looking out at the stunning view, and knew in her heart that Sebastian had built this cabin with her in mind. Everything from the rustic exterior to the more modern interior, from the white couch in the living room to the sleigh beds in the bedroom, from the fireplace to the huge wall of glass showcasing the most amazing view.

It was all for her.

Knowing that hurt so badly because it convinced her that Sebastian had always loved her. That the words he had so cruelly and thoughtlessly flung at her fifteen years ago were his biggest regret, and that while she had done her best to forget him and their shared past, he had been constantly thinking of her.

Why hadn’t he come to her sooner?

If he had, they could have already been living their lives, the life a part of her still desperately craved. Okay, not a part of her. Every single atom of her being craved this life, the one that had been her dream growing up. They would be married with kids, enjoying every moment of their time together.

As much as she wished Sebastian hadn’t waited so long to come to her, tell her he was sorry, and ask for a second chance, Ariel also had to acknowledge that if he had come sooner, she wouldn’t have been ready.

Would have turned him away without even listening to him, because the pain had been too great.

Ironically, it was her ordeal that had put her in a place where she could accept his apology. Being forced to endure something horrific definitely put life into perspective. Forgiveness was easy to give after living through what she had.

Not that she was ready to reach out and take the future that could have been.

Might never be.

And it wasn’t even because she didn’t trust Sebastian anymore. That trust was coming back, being rebuilt thread by thread with each loving word and glance he sent her way.

Jumping into anything right now just wasn’t an option.

Careful.

She had to tread carefully. Right now, she didn’t even know who she was. Wasn’t sure she liked who she was. At the back of her mind, constantly taunting her, were the memories of willingly crawling out of her cage and submitting to a man she knew meant her harm for a bowl of cheesy pasta.

That memory haunted her. It was always there, no matter what she was doing, and it replayed in her dreams on an endless loop each night.

Would it always be there?

How could she ever hope to live her life with its constant presence?

Much as she’d like to, Ariel knew she couldn’t hide out in here all day. She’d heard Sebastian get up an hour ago as she tossed and turned in bed, and while she knew he would never come knocking on her door to draw her out of her room, he was waiting for her, nonetheless.
