Russo looked perfectly comfortable sitting on the stool, sipping water from a glass, and looking around the inside of the bar. Since there weren’t any windows, it always seemed like nighttime in the saloon. The music was too loud to hear the deluge outside. Instead of the usual country tunes playing on the jukebox, eighties favorites blasted. Since the place was so large, it felt empty with only twelve or so patrons sitting at the scattered tables or in the booths that filled the one wall. A few servers walked around, balancing trays in one hand and their cell phones in the other. Since it was still early, Duffy was probably lenient on the girls, especially with the dangerous weather conditions.

The long room was dimly lit with dangling light fixtures over the booths and a soft red blinking light above the dance floor. A pair of overly bubbly women moved to the music. They appeared too drunk to worry about flooding, along with the couple in the corner of the room whose lips were locked.

Duffy came through the door behind the counter and immediately spotted me.

“Sadie, what the hell are you doing in here during a rainstorm?”

Duffy wore a white t-shirt that accentuated his biceps, and his thick blond hair and round face gave the man a boyish look. Duffy smiled a lot, and as he joined us at the counter, he had a great big one plastered to his face.

I glanced around to make sure no one was close enough to hear our conversation. The music drowned out voices, but in a small town like Possum Gap, people would notice the sheriff speaking to Duffy. It was always best being careful. “When was the last time you saw Willow Dover in here or anywhere?”

Duffy’s eyes flared and I saw him suck in a small breath before he spoke. “Why?” He turned to Russo as if noticing him for the first time. “Is she okay?”

I thought quickly. If Duffy was sleeping with Willow, her death would be very upsetting—unless he’s the one who killed her. News would leak out quickly, especially when the weather cleared, and her next of kin had already been notified.

My mind made up, I caught Duffy’s eye and gestured at Russo. “This is Raymond Russo, our new county coroner. He’s helping investigate Willow Dover’s murder.”

Duffy’s hands dropped and he clutched the countertop. Color drained from his face while his mouth sagged.

“How? When?” Duffy asked.

“At Cunningham Campground. I won’t go into the particulars of her death, except that it was brutal.”

Duffy rubbed his face. I glanced sideways and found Russo watching the other man closely.

Duffy had control of his emotions. His face tightened while his voice remained steady. “Do you have any suspects?” He licked his lips and glanced at Russo. “I mean, why are you here talking to me?”

I’d known Duffy since high school. Sure, I had been younger, and we never hung around each other, but still, I’d known him for a long time. Possum
