Chapter 8

It was the darkest dark Lily had ever seen. There was no light coming from anywhere, and for several seconds, she felt entirely alone. She reached out and found Art’s knee.

“It’s okay, Torie,” Art said and put his hand over Lily’s.

“It’s me!” Lily said.

Just then Angel let out a whimper.

“Hey, Angel,” Joe said. “Let’s pretend we’re hiding. That’ll be cool.”

“Who needs to hide?” Art said. “You could be an escaped felon in here.”

“Thank you,” Torie said. “That just put an image in my head I could do without.”

Lily was amazed at how calm Torie sounded. Her own heart was racing, and beyond the bleachers, she could hear people shouting in worried voices. A couple of kids were crying.

“Listen to those little babies, Angel,” Joe said. “They don’t know how to be big like you.”

Neither do I, Lily thought. This is freaking me out!

“Okay, the joke’s over,” Torie said. “Let’s get those lights on.”

“What do you want to bet the storm knocked out the electricity,” Art said.

“Wonderful,” Torie said. “Being stuck here wasn’t enough. Now we have to be stuck—in the dark!”

Just then something groaned as if it were just waking up, and a dim light filtered between the benches above them. There was a weak cheer from the other part of the gym.

“All the way on would be nice,” Art said. “Come on, you can do it.”

“That’s the generator,” Torie said. “It only gives you enough light to see by.”

“What about to cook by?” Joe said. “Man, I’m starving.”

For the first time all day, Lily wasn’t thinking about food. She scrambled to her feet and headed for Camp Robbins. Torie was right—there was barely enough light to see by—but she could make out Mom and Dad’s shapes, and she was headed right for them.

“Taylor says the storm’s knocked out the power lines,” Dad was saying when she got there—with the rest of them on her heels. Torie was carrying the Barbie Monopoly game. Angel was riding on Joe’s shoulders.

“This just keeps getting better and better, doesn’t it?” Mom shook her head, bouncing her ponytail.

“I like dat—dat mine!” Angel said and made a lunge for Mom’s hair.

Joe was barely able to hang onto her.

“Who’s this little person?” Mom said.

“This is Angel,” Joe said. “Cool name, huh?”

“Oops—we have birthday candles coming out of our nose,” Mom said. She pulled a Kleenex out of her sweats pocket and dabbed at Angel’s nose. Angel didn’t seem to notice; she was too fascinated by the ponytail.

“Get out your survival book, Hiker Adventure Barbie,” Art said to Lily. “See if you can get us out of this one.”

Lily could feel her shoulders sagging. She couldn’t win.

“What survival book?” Torie said.

“Never mind,” Lily said. “It wouldn’t do us any good. I need a whole different book.”

“Maybe you ought to try the one I brought,” Dad said.

“We each had to bring one book,” Art said to Torie.

“And only one,” Joe put in.

Lily looked at her father. “You brought a survival book too?”

“I did,” Dad said. “It tells you how to survive in any situation.
