Gage would remain involved in the women’s rights movement for the rest of her life, often working closely with both Stanton and Anthony, despite their differences on abolitionism. She served as president of the NWSA from 1875 to 1876. When Stanton and Anthony decided to document the suffrage movement, they chose Gage (along with Ida Husted Harper) to be their coauthor.

Gage’s radicalism found its expression in many ways. In 1871, she attempted to vote, a year before Anthony did. And when Anthony was arrested and brought to trial, Gage defended her at great length, arguing that both law and morality supported her effort to vote.

But perhaps Gage’s most radical act would come in 1890, when the two main suffrage organizations, the NWSA and AWSA, finally merged back together into NAWSA. Gage, along with Stanton, would oppose the merger, once more choosing radicalism over compromise. Rather than joining the NAWSA, Gage would establish the Women’s National Liberal Union, which she would lead until her death in 1898. In addition to supporting women’s suffrage, this organization took more controversial positions, such as criticizing the male-dominated Christian church and its treatment of women.

Gage had, as we say today, the courage of her convictions. And when a younger generation of suffragists, led by Alice Paul and Lucy Burns, joined the movement a decade later, they would align themselves with this same radical tradition. In the end, their determined idealism would ultimately win the day, as the seemingly impossible turned out not to be so impossible after all.
