Sinclair Lewis and Dorothy Thompson owned the property from the 1920s to the 1950s. While traveling, Lewis wrote his wife that he wished he were home - "the apple trees, and flaming lilies, and the moon over the low mountains and you and me... and lamplight and lots of books."

Today Twin Farms is an oasis on 300 acres of woods, gardens and lake. It is a romantic place where you can linger beside old stone walls, with colorful gardens and paths beckoning you on. Most important is the silence of this isolated hillside, broken only by the songs of birds and the barely perceptible fluttering of butterflies.

Rooms in the main house range from Red's Room, with its handsome silver-blue slate fireplace and needlepoint rug that looks like a quilt pattern, to a room in green and white toile de Jouy, depicting Marquis de Lafayette's arrival in America. Dorothy's Room has an unusual fireplace that resembles a Russian stove and watercolors with a Russian flavor. The Lodge was once a place where skiers congregated beside a roaring fire after an outing. Today it still looks like a lodge, with plaid couches beside the fireplace.

Each of the cottages has been designed in a different style. If you like fish you'll enjoy Perch, with its collection of antique fish decoys and carvings. Dog fanciers will love Log Cabin; dogs decorate chairs, pillows, door stops, a carriage robe, a chandelier and "Cave Canem," an Italian tile picture that looks as if it came from Pompeii. Meadow Cottage has Moroccan flair with an amazing ceiling that looks like a tent but isn't.

Guests needn't worry about selecting meals from a menu - it is all chosen for them. Breakfast may be served in your room or in the breakfast room of the Main House. Lunch may be taken as an elegant picnic during an excursion, or on the grounds, or in the dining room. Dinner is preceded by a cocktail gathering, then a lingering meal.

The staff are very discreet in preserving the privacy of guests. They can't help but notice that some people arrive straight from a hectic week in the city, full of tension; two days later, their faces are relaxed. Any celebrities are sheltered from the outside world during a visit.

All of this comes at a price - we met a couple who said they had never spent so much on one night... but added that it was worth it!
