“YOU’VE REALLY lost it this time, Bud,” Ari said, parking the car in the self-park lot at the JFK airport. The loud roar of a plane on take-off cut off his voice. Frank could see Ari’s mouth moving, but didn’t know what he was saying. Though, with the expression on Ari’s face, he knew it had to be some sort of advice. Advice he hadn’t asked for. “. . . so what are you going to do then?”

“What do you mean, what am I going to do then? If I don’t find her? If I do find her?”

“If you don’t find her,” Ari said.

“Then I guess I continue living life as I know it. Listen, if I hadn’t come here, I’d never have forgiven myself.”

“You do know how friggin’ crazy this is, don’t you?” Frank ignored his question. “I mean, you just met her?”

“I know, I know.” Frank’s eyes widened with each word. “And you’re probably right, but I can’t stop thinking about her, Ari. She’s fun, she’s pretty, we clicked, and I just have this feeling I let my soulmate slip through my fingers.”

Ari laughed. “Now, I know you’ve lost it. Christ, Frank. What’s wrong with you? You don’t even know if this is the right airport or what time she was leaving.”

“No one uses LaGuardia anymore.”

Ari groaned and shook his head, then reached out to feel Frank’s forehead. “That’s not true. This might be the busiest airport in the city, but it’s New Year’s Eve next week, man, and she’s obviously going home so her boyfriend can take her out.” Ari twirled a finger next to his temple. “This is definitely crazy.”

Frank bit his bottom lip to avoid saying something he’d regret. “And maybe she’s going home to break up with him,” Frank huffed out. “Listen, why don’t you leave,” he added with sarcasm. “I’ll take a taxi back to the city.”

Ari scrunched up his face. “I’m sorry, Frank.” He threw his hands up. “I guess I’m not being a very good friend right now. You’ve been through more than your share of my crazy shit.” Ari nodded toward the bench against the wall, “How about we sit for a while? I could really use a cup of coffee. You want some?”

“Yeah.” Frank handed Ari a ten-dollar bill.

“I don’t want that.”

“But I want you to use this to pay for the coffee.”

Ari took the bill and read aloud what his friend had scribbled across the bill earlier. “Frank 917-442-1592. You wrote your information down on a ten-dollar bill?”

“Yeah, you see something wrong with that?” Frank said with a clipped tone.

“Nope.” Ari’s head wagged back and forth as he walked toward the shop. “Not a damn thing.”

Frank lowered himself down onto the bench while keeping a watchful eye on the throng of people coming through the double doors and wondered if he was ever going to see her again. He thought back to their conversation about where she went to college and tried to remember if she’d told him. Ari was right, this was the craziest thing he’d ever done.
