11 - Stevie

Stevie woke feeling sore in the right places. Barely opening one eye, she turned her head to her left to see if Rogue was awake. His eyes were closed, and his breathing was even. He really was beautiful, especially with his features relaxed in slumber.

She knew she’d remember how he lovingly covered her skin grafts with lotion, making sure to keep the area moisturized. Stevie never thought she’d allow another human to see the scars, much less touch them.

“I feel you looking at me.” His voice was rough from sleep, but nothing about his body indicated he was awake.

Stevie tried to fake being asleep, but it didn’t work. “You’re terrible at playing possum. Remind me to get into a game of strip poker with you. I’d win every hand.”

Stevie couldn’t stop the laughter that bubbled up. She thought she’d feel self-conscious lying mostly naked in bed with a man. But not with this man. Everything about Mac Steele was comfortable. “Thank you.” She turned from her back to face him, then reached out and stroked the side of his face. “You’ve done nothing but care for me since we met.”

Rogue opened his beautiful brown eyes and smiled. He pulled her close then kissed her forehead. “I don’t know why you feel so right, why you fit so well. You have to know, I’m a possessive man, Stevie. I’m not easy to live with, and between work and the club, I’m usually so busy I’m rarely home.”

He blew out a breath. “My dad is sick with Alzheimer’s and getting worse. It won’t be long before I have to move him into my house. On top of all that, I’ll get jealous, I’ll push all your buttons at one time or another, but I promise you this, you will always be safe with me.”

“I know.” Her heartbeat sped up. This was real and getting serious, but she had to get it all out in the open. “I just don’t know what will happen to me after the trial. I’ve been in protective custody since he was arrested which means he is a danger to me.

“But even more frightening, if he’s found not guilty and goes free, I’ll definitely be hunted by him. It wouldn’t be right to put you, your brother, and most especially your father at risk. I can’t let you put your family in that position, Mac”

“Angel, look at me.” He waited until she propped herself up on her forearm. “That’s not your worry, especially right now. We’re going to take it one day at a time, angel. But, let’s be honest, between my club, my brother the cop, and me, you’ll always be safe. So will my dad.”

“I want to believe that. I hope for the day where I can relax, but,” Stevie bit her bottom lip and thought about what Rogue was saying.

Rogue touched her chin with his thumb and gently pulled her lip from between her teeth. He gazed into her eyes. “You’ve been put through some terrible things, angel.
