Chapter 11

The ground is shaking like an earthquake, and we all stumble around, trying to hold our balance. What is going on?

“This must be one of the protections!” Logan yells.

“No shit!” Nick yells back.

The ground cracks open, and out of the fissures crawl… well, the closest word I can come up with would be trolls. I’ve never seen actual trolls before, although they do exist, but that’s because they’re in Scandinavia. Iceland, Norway, those places, they have trolls, not North America. What the hell?

The trolls rise up, like creatures made out of rocks and boulders, with strange, grotesque faces, and massive hands that look like they can crush me with one blow.

Holy fuck.

I fire up my telekinesis and shove the trolls as far back as I can, but the trolls just seem to… shake it off? The magic seems to go into them instead of working against them. I’ve never seen anything like it before. Is this a power that trolls have? Not that I’m aware of. But then again, I was studying creatures like phoenixes and unicorns, the kinds of creatures I could possibly change into, not supernatural creatures that are more than animals, that have an actual humanoid intelligence. I can’t turn into those. If I could, I’d be a full-on shapeshifter.

Nick grabs one of his devices and it spurts out magic at the trolls as well, the four of us giving it all we’ve got, but the trolls seem to absorb Nick’s magic as well. What is going on?

One of the trolls pounds on the ground with its knuckles, sending vibrations reverberating through the ground and through our bodies. I lose my footing and slam onto the ground, scrambling to my feet as soon as I can. I fire another blast of telekinesis at them, but once again it doesn’t seem to do anything.

Instead, another one of the trolls, the one that I hit, shoves his hands in my direction and blasts me with my own telekinesis.

All of us are hit with the force of it, although I just manage to keep my feet under me this time, and I stare in horror. How are these trolls doing this? How are they able to use our magic against us?

Saint and Logan launch themselves at the trolls again. Between Logan’s imperviousness and Saint’s super senses and reflexes, they’re able to go hand to hand against these trolls in a way that Nick and I can’t.

“This is insane.” I look over at Nick. “This doesn’t make sense.”

“No, it doesn’t.” He’s fiddling with another device, enchanting it with magic, already thinking of another plan. “I don’t think trolls can do this.”

I don’t know of anything that can do this. It’s almost… actually, it's almost like the tests I used to go through at Griffin.

They never wanted us to actually get hurt during our tests at Griffin Academy, but they did want us to test ourselves to the best of our abilities. They wanted to actually see, as best they could, how we would be able to use and control our magic in a real-world setting.
