“We’re Himalayan big wall climbing, and we broke our portaledge,” Jimmy said, emphasizing the final words as the shock set in.

After making sure everyone was safe, the team realized how big the problem was. The “ledge,” as climbers call it, was a vital piece of equipment. Without it, they wouldn’t have any shelter from the cold.

But mountaineers are always quick with a creative fix. Jimmy, Conrad, and Renan used ice screws and athletic tape to stabilize the broken bar and were soon ready to move on.

The next section of the expedition was “big wall climbing.” In this style, one climber goes ahead to set the path—using special screws, hooks, and bolts to secure the ropes. It would take multiple days and require the team to camp in the portaledge along the route.

Jimmy started out in the lead, on a tricky pitch nicknamed House of Cards. It was a nearly vertical wall of granite, made up of huge blocks that are only held together with grit and ice. If one of these blocks were to fall, Jimmy would be ripped right off the mountain. Conrad and Renan would likely be pulled off with him.
