It's A Date

Cadell walked through the parking lot with Andy, tossing his keys in the air and catching them. Moving his shoulder to catch the keys loosened it up. He shook his arm in between tosses, trying to dislodge the cramp deep inside, and tossed the keys toward the cloudy night sky again.

Andy reached in front of him and caught the keys. “I’ll drive.”

“Hey! Give those back!” He was laughing at her and pawing the air around her, pretending to try to get his keys back.

She held the keys out to her other side, away from him. “You’ve been drinking.”

“I had one scotch and soda before the set, over an hour ago.”

“So you have been drinking. I’ll drive.”

“And you haven’t been?”

“Not a bit.”

He could tell that she hadn’t had any alcohol when he’d kissed her. Her mouth had been sweet, not fouled with liquor. “Okay, fine.”

Riding on the passenger side would probably rest his shoulder, anyway.

At the car, Cadell shoved his guitar case in the back seat and moved the seat all the way back. The motor whirred as the seat inched backward.

On the other side of the car, Andy’s seat rolled forward as she sat in it, holding onto the steering wheel with her fingertips as the seat came closer to the dashboard.

He sat and waited while she tested whether she could reach the pedals. Being small and curvy came with its own set of problems, evidently.

Cadell said, “We have another gig this weekend. Bigger one. Larger club. Just to field-test some more songs. Do you want to take the camera so Emily can see it, too?”

Andy twisted in the seat to see behind them.

The car sped backward out of the parking space, shoving Cadell forward. A spike shot through his shoulder.

“Oops. Sorry. Touchy accelerator,” Andy said.

“Sports car. Big engine. Just barely juice it. Do you want to go this weekend or not?”

“Um, I have a thing on Saturday afternoon. I probably shouldn’t.” She glanced at him. “You’ll be okay for a couple of hours, right?”

“Yeah. Of course. What kind of thing?”

“I have a puja at the temple.”

“Something to do with your wedding,” he supplied, hoping he was wrong.

“Yes. There is a problem with my horoscope, so we have to offer prayers and money or something. I don’t know. My parents just tell me when to show up to these things.”

Damn it. “When is your wedding?”

“Three weeks.”

Three weeks. Under just about any other circumstance, he would feel bad about wanting to steal a bride and break up a relationship that was just budding.

But, hell, this Two-Date Tommy had locked her down by recruiting her family to pressure her. As Andy had assured him, she wasn’t in love. That guy didn’t love her, either.

No one would be heartbroken if Cadell broke up this financial transaction and took Andy for his own, for the rest of his life, because he loved her.

And because Emily loved her, too.

Cadell asked, “The thing is in the afternoon?”

“It starts around eleven o’clock in the morning, but I’m sure that it will be long, and they will come for lunch afterward.
