Chapter Forty-One

Over the following days, life just seemed to take over. The questions and answers were never very far from April’s mind. Still, with hospital appointments and sorting out the bedroom for the upcoming arrival of the baby, April was too busy to deal with anything else.

Shane seemed a little distant, too, and April had wondered if it was because he didn’t want her to speak with Michael or whether his mind was still on her attempted suicide. Shane had decided not to tell Sharon; they just let her think she hadn’t filled out the script.

April had seen Knox several times but hadn’t had sex again. He would pull up on his Harley, and April would speak to him out the front. She knew Sharon was watching, so he was always careful not to touch her and not let Sharon know that anything other than friendship was between them.

April was surprised one Saturday when Shane came to the house. She had finished the final touch-ups on the room, set up the crib, and dressed it.

“That looks great, April,” Shane said, giving April a slight fright.

April turned to see Shane at the bedroom door. He smiled and looked around at the nursery and her bedroom.

“You’ve made a real difference in here,” he said as he entered the room.

April smiled up at him, pleased with her achievement.

“Do you still want to get your answers?” he asked as his smile dropped.

April felt a lurch in her stomach as her anxiety began to rise. Suddenly April wasn’t sure she wanted to know anymore. But there was a sick stubbornness flowing through her that needed to know. April nodded at Shane as he frowned.

“Are you sure? You don’t have to,” he said as he held April’s shoulder lightly.

“Yes, I’m sure. Are we going to speak with Michael?” April asked.

Shane nodded and explained how it was visiting day at the prison. He had written to Michael and organized to put their names on the visitor's list. April wasn’t sure that this was the right thing to do, but she just needed to know why. April swallowed hard at the reality of what was about to happen, and she could feel her hands shake.

“Is Knox coming too?” April asked.

Shane shook his head. “I didn’t think that was a good idea to involve him in this; Michael and the Kings of Darkness aren’t on friendly terms,” Shane said, squeezing April’s shoulder.

Her mind went back to Richard and his demise. A shiver went through her body, and she shook her head. Shane frowned and lifted her chin to look into her eyes.

“Alright, that sounds like a good thing then. I’m ready then,” she said with a determined nod.

On the way to the prison, they drove silently, with only the radio to break the awkwardness. April watched the world slip by from the window of the car. Dylan flooded her thoughts, his face, scent, and touch. Knox wasn’t far from her mind either; she still had that niggling guilt, and no matter how many times Shane or Knox assured her that it was alright to move on.
