CHAPTER 36

Juan cleared his throat after he was sure that Laina was gone, causing Anthony to look his way.

“What’s up, man?” Anthony asked.

“How are things going with your new trainee?”

“Fine, why?”

“I heard you invite her to join us for lunch.”

“She’s new. What would you have done?”

“Show her the postdoc lounge and let her figure it out.”

“Well, I prefer to be more hospitable when we have new people with us.”

“Do you now…” Juan rolled his eyes at Anthony’s comment. “I seem to remember it taking you about two years to eat lunch with me.”

“Why are you so bitter lately? First, you accused me of flirting and now you’re grumpy about me including you for lunch? I could have left you out, you know?”

“I’m not bitter. I just, I’m reserving judgment on our new lab-mate until she’s been here a little while. Something about them seems off to me.”

“Off in what way?”

“There’s just something, I don’t know, fake about their personalities. Maybe I’m just being sensitive.”

“Yeah, you are. Try to lighten up, man.”

They heard someone approaching the lab from down the hall, so they stopped speaking. Juan went back to staring at this computer screen, as did Anthony. When no one entered the lab, Juan rolled his chair away from his desk so that he could see Anthony better.

“It just seems like she is trying to underplay her intelligence and I don’t know why she would do that.”

Anthony rolled his eyes. “We’ve only known her, like, two days, man. Let’s give her the benefit of the doubt here.”

“Okay, but I’m still keeping my eye on her.”
