I peeked in on Lis in the morning before I left. Her face was soft in sleep with a rosy glow and her lips were puckered in the cutest way. I quietly left and made my way downstairs. I didn’t expect to find anything I could eat for breakfast, but she had all my favorites stocked. I had oatmeal with blueberries in it, a bagel with herbed cream cheese, and a protein shake that I liked. My heart warmed that she’d paid so close attention.

I felt better than I had for weeks after having some of my normal foods in me. I couldn’t wait to hit the ice. Cap was not going to score against me today. I vowed it. I walked into the locker room whistling and finally feeling settled and excited about the Cajuns’ program. I knew this was a good place to be. Look at what had already happened, Mikko excluded. Speaking of which, he was one of a few in the locker room getting ready and was already snarling at me.

“Come on, man. Can’t we put this shit aside and get along?” I said to him.

“They are making me pay fifty grand to that little bitch of yours in damages. You can’t tell me that she’s lost that much—” I swung back and nailed him in the mouth. His head flew back and then he touched his mouth and saw the blood from his split lip. He went mental and we were about to get into it in a real way until I heard coach yelling at us. He got between us and gave us each a shove. Coach Ross was hot on his tail.

“He fucking hit me again!” Mikko yelled.

“Nummi, I’d shut the fuck up. I heard what you called that poor girl you hurt. Is your head so thick as to say that to Tag? Really? Fucking get a clue! I want you doing laps the whole practice,” Coach said.

“But—” Mikko started but coach held his hand up.

“I don’t want to hear your pansy excuse for using that kind of name for a woman. You are pushing every last button of mine.” Mikko turned around and you could see his shoulders and back muscles flexing as he tried to calm his breathing down. Coach Ross pulled me over to the side.

“How’s your hand?” he asked.

“What?” I was so pissed I didn’t hear him. He took my face and turned it toward his. My body was vibrating.

“I asked how your hand was?” he said. I hadn’t felt anything but looking down I saw my knuckles were bleeding. Ross gently moved them back and forth.

“Nothing looks broken but let’s put some ice on it and keep the swelling down. Looks like one of his teeth took a chunk out of you.” I looked down again and sure enough, I had a gash across one of my knuckles that was causing most of the blood.

Coach Ross took me to the trainers’ room and cleaned up my hand, wrapping it and then putting an ice pack on it.
