Rex had no idea how he’d get Charles to confess to the law, but he’d done all he could. He made one more stop before heading back to Hays, going to the local law office to report to the sheriff all he knew and leave it up to them to decide if they'd investigate Charles Hunter. The sheriff just happened to be a personal friend of Edward Manning's, and he was extremely interested in Rex’s story. He took notes and promised he’d get to the bottom of it as soon as possible.
When Maggie woke from her nap, she dressed and had Wade hitch the buggy for her. Sophie came out with a picnic basket and jumped up beside her on the driver’s perch. They rode into Hays, to the doctor’s little white house at the end of the main street.
Ruth set the table, Sophie unpacked her basket, and Ella, Sophie, Maggie, Reece, Robert and Ella ate chicken and dumplings. Maggie helped Reece, since he couldn’t move his left arm.
When they were finished, Maggie prepared to take Sophie home. “Shall I return and sit the night with you, Reece?”
“No,” he said. “There isn’t much sense in it. We both need a good night’s sleep, but I’d love to have breakfast with you in the morning.”
“Good news!” Doc Reed exclaimed from the doorway. “Tomorrow, you can go home if someone helps me carry you onto a wagon—no buggy because you need to lay flat a few more days. I think you’re out of the woods, though.”
“No fear of fever anymore?” Maggie asked.
“If he was going to get an infection it would have happened already. I think he can go home,” Doc said. “I’ll change his bandages in the morning. I’ll continue to visit him at home until I’m sure he’s well enough.”
“I’ll have breakfast ready for you at home, then,” she said.
“I’ll come in the morning,” Robert offered. “I’ll get someone to help me load him into a wagon and I’ll deliver him to you, Maggie.”
Sophie brightened. “Bring Ella and we’ll all have breakfast together.”
Just as Maggie, Sophie, Robert, and Ella were about to leave, Ruth came in and announced, “You have another visitor, Reece. Shall I show her in?”
Reece asked, “Who is it?”
“She said her name was Betsy Hunter.”
