Chapter Fourteen

Over the past few days, Tom and his siblings had been through far more adventures than the average person. Soon, the excitement was to be over. And he was glad - he had been through enough action to last him a lifetime. Transforming from a skinny 10-year-old kid to a fearless warrior/cyberspace surfer was more than he wanted in life; he’d happily settle for being the next David Beckham. And now, he was about to be shoved into the Minotaur’s labyrinth, where he would be ripped to shreds, if it weren’t for his older sister. He sighed and then quickly picked up his pace when he caught one of the guards glaring at him.

‘Hey, buddy, we aren’t paying you to breathe more air than you’re supposed to,’ the red-headed muscleman growled.

‘You guys aren’t paying me at all,’ said Tom, raising his eyebrows.

‘Stop wasting air!’ yelled the guard.

Tom quickly sputtered out a, ‘Yes, sir,’ and hastily scurried to his brother’s side.

After trundling on for a few more minutes, they halted in front of a door. A man with a nose ring took out a key from his pocket and inserted it into the keyhole. It took him a while to wrench the door open, but eventually he managed it.

‘Get inside,’ he barked and the six captives quickly obeyed. ‘Unless you’ve got a map of this place, there’s no way you’ll ever find a way out of here!’

The guards all laughed heartily at his witty joke.

‘Fatheads,’ coughed Zach.

Zoey giggled.

The pierced guard leaned towards her and grinned. ‘You might have a hard time in there,’ he smirked. ‘Beasts are attracted to beauty.’

Zoey responded by slapping him hard across the face and then bolting into the open door. ‘This way!’ she called, flicking open her mobile.

The others quickly ran after her. As they ran, Tom looked around at his surroundings in awe. The guards were right - without a map, there was no way out. Already, Tom had spotted seven dead ends.

‘Are you sure you know how to get out?’ he called.

‘I think so,’ came the reply. ‘The picture’s a little blurred. My hand must have moved while I .’ Zoey skidded to a halt.

The other captives stopped behind her and then looked upwards in horror. Before them was a humongous monster, towering over them menacingly. With the head of an oversized bull and the physique of a bodybuilder, the Minotaur could have unnerved the bravest of men.

‘Got a plan?’ hissed Samantha, the colour rapidly draining from her cheeks.

‘Yeah,’ whispered Zach, ‘run!’

Aatghl’ everybody yelled, blundering forwards.

With an almighty snort, the Minotaur shook his razor-sharp tusks and charged.

‘I know where the exit is now!’ Zoey screamed, changing direction swiftly.

‘Oh, now she figures it out!’ cried Tom in frustration.

Clouds of dust rose from the ground as six pairs of feet and two enormous hooves pounded the floor in the chase.

Samantha’s chest heaved as she took a huge gulp of air into her lungs. Her legs no longer belonged to her; they were propelling themselves forwards of their own accord.
