Chapter Nine

Forty-five minutes and a full belly later, I found myself back at the office with my feet up on the armrest of the sofa watching the news. There weren't any messages left on the machine while I was out, so I settled in to wait for a call. Any call.

Like the old saying goes – be careful what you wish for. It was creeping up on to eight when Robinson called.

“Murphy,” I said, when I answered after the second ring.

“Robinson. Catchin' you at a bad time?”

“Yeah, but that's okay. I forgive you,” I said.

“Cute. Listen. I heard back from my contact in the Organized Crime Unit. Seems your boy Horowitz is a piece of work, and connected. Runs a medium-sized book over in Vinegar Hill and maybe another one in the Heights for one of Giacondi's Capos. He's got an impressive rap sheet. Everythin' from loan sharking to extortion. There's a coupla suspicious deaths they think could be laid at his feet too. They are treating him as big league, but not made. Wrong pedigree, I guess,” Robinson said.

“Makes sense with a name like Horowitz. The mob's got a strict admission policy: Gotta be from the vineyards and hills back home in Sicily.”

“Yeah. So why do you think this guy's interested in you?”

“No idea. Shit, before today I never even heard of him.”

“That leaves only one possibility, right?”

“Yeah, looks that way, although I can't think why him and Tate would in bed together,” I said.

“Accordin' to my guy, it looks like Tate and Mitchell may have done some business with Horowitz through their dealings with Sewell.”

“Hmm. Yeah, I guess. Sewell had to be getting his shit from somewhere and if Horowitz is connected to Giacondi then...” I said.

“Uh-huh. That's what we figure, what with the mob controlling all the imports.”

“You think maybe he's put him up somewhere?” I asked.

“Possible. My guys couldn't say if they were that close.”

“Yeah, but it's possible, especially if Tate is doing a deal with Giacondi, right?”

“Hmm, again, maybe,” Robinson said. “Only sure way to know would be to squeeze Horowitz. Wanna give it a try?”

“You're kidding, right?”

“Yeah. Look, leave it with me. I still got a few contacts I can call. Maybe I can shake something loose.”

“Okay. Maybe between our collective resources we can net the bastard.” I said.

“You'd think that wouldn't ya. By the way, my guy says Horowitz is a heavy hitter but isn't known to act on his own. So, if anyone is going to cause you any grief from that end it'll be coming from Giacondi either directly or on his say so.”

“That's comforting,” I said.

“Yeah, well, I don't think you need to worry just yet. My guy says that there isn't a peep on the street about you. So I think whatever's goin' on is localized between Tate and Horowitz.”

“Let's hope so. Giacondi is one problem I can live without...no pun intended.”

“How you gettin' on with the lead on Tate's girlfriend?'

“I hope to hear something by tonight.”

“Funny how no one considered that possibility before.
