PART THREE

THE SURPRISE

“You should go talk to her,” Ash yawned and kicked off his shoes before settling down on the bed. He didn’t bother getting under the covers.

Lilith shook her head. “She’s just some crazy old lady who has mistaken me for someone else. Besides, maybe I can get some sleep too.” She wasn’t tired, but she forced a yawn and stretched her arms. At least it felt nice to be out of the car.

“How do you know? What if she’s telling the truth? What if she’s the first person you’ve ever come across who knows about your past?”

“Some random woman who I happened to meet because I went on a road trip with a stranger? And she’s the one who knows about my past?” she snorted, “Somehow I doubt it.”

Ash shrugged. “Stranger things have happened. If anything, it sounds like a good reason to hear her out — fate led you to her.” He yawned again.

Lilith raised an eyebrow, “And I’m the one who sounds new-agey?”

“Whatever. All I’m saying is how much do you really know about your past? What if she is telling the truth? What if she’s your one shot at finding out where you come from? You’re just going to give that opportunity up because, what? The lady might be a little crazy? Isn’t everyone?”

“But—”

Ash held a hand up, silencing her. “It’s not my past. You want to stay, stay. I’m done debating this. I need to pass out. Now. Turn off the light.” He rolled over and pulled his pillow around his head with a loud moan, signaling the conversation was over.

“Fine,” she mumbled. She reached over and clicked off the lamp on the nightstand and sat on the edge of the bed in the dark.

Ash’s words echoed in her ears. How much do your really know about your past? It was a valid question, one she had a hard time answering. There was what she was told, and what she knew was fact — but she was told a lot of conflicting, random things, and she didn’t remember much, except for flashes of rooms in a house, and bright, colorful floral wallpaper that made her happy. Outside of that, she didn’t remember much.

What if the woman had mistaken her for someone else? Then Lilith would be wasting time better served sleeping by talking to her. Ash was already snoring. That didn’t take long, she sighed. She wouldn’t be able to sleep as long as the possibility of finding out where she came from was on the table. She had to exhaust this avenue before her mind would let her weary body rest.

Forcing herself up from the bed, Lilith went in search of the old woman.
