Chapter Twenty-Four
AFTER getting a much-needed healing energy session from Alima in the infirmary, Orri exited the temple. The bright blue sky overhead reminded him of when Atlantis hadnât been in danger, but the damage to the buildings on either side of the main boulevard told a different story. He walked briskly to the outer ring of the city. Since he had left the skull room, Noor had been so quiet Orri felt like his old self.
When he reached the last ring, he turned into a tight alley where narrow houses leaned toward each other almost touching at the top. The empty lane twisted and turned. The only light came from the windows of the houses. He stopped halfway down an alley and opened the door. The sweet smell of baking wafted to him. âYa-ya, itâs only me,â he shouted.
âIn the kitchen,â his grandmother answered.
Orri walked down the hall to the back of the house. The peeling paint needed to be fixed but she wouldnât let him do it. He hadnât been home in a while, and he missed her company.
Before he was through the stone archway to the kitchen, she had him in a tight hug. Her head only came up to his chest, so he bent over to hug her back. He felt her warm energy flow into him, and he pulled in all she gave him.
She stepped back to gaze into his eyes. Her grey eyes twinkled in her wrinkled face, and her wavy grey hair hung loose down her back like a young girlâs. She put her hands on her hips. âYou look tired. And skinny too. Are you getting enough to eat? Pancha is not enough to feed a growing boy. You need real food.â
âYa-ya, Iâm just in the door. Let me sit down before you grill me.â Orri laughed and he felt Noor chuckle too.
âIt is only because I love you. Now sit.â
âIâm sitting.â Orri pulled a chair out from the table. This table had been in his grandmotherâs kitchen as long as he could remember. The single pedestal had four lionâs paws for its feet. It supported a thick stone tabletop. He used to sit under the table and pretend the table leg was a real lion who could talk to him.
Ya-ya placed a plate of sweet buns on the table and sat in a chair beside him. She waited until he had finished one bun before the questions started.
âSome houses in the second ring have been damaged by tremors. There is nothing here yet. Is there more damage at the temple?â
âAdam is back,â said Orri, ignoring her question.
She reached out and squeezed his hand. âHow do you feel about that?â
âYou know me too well.â Orri gazed into her eyes. âItâs different this time. Weâre different. Adam and Iâweâre working together.â
âIâm proud of you.â Her eyes filled with tears.
âYa-ya, what...â
âItâs nothing,â she interrupted him. âA silly old woman sees her little boy all grown up.â She wiped her cheek with the hem of her tunic.
