Epilogue

A year had come and gone since the Fourth of July revelation. Jubal had gotten out of his troubles by dying the same night the lies had come undone. He'd spent his last conscious thought cursing the only One who could have saved his mortal soul. The gates of hell were open wide when he fell in.

As Luke predicted, Turner had given Catherine away at their wedding, and soon afterward, Catherine had moved Turner into Annie's cabin. The shelves that had once been lined with books now held his carvings in all stages of development.

Dancy Hollis, who had never cared for herbs in the same manner as his brothers, had, quite by accident, become an agent for Turner's work. With a growing demand for the pieces, it was ironic that the hunter who'd lived by skill and wits alone was becoming a wealthy man.

It took months for the people on the mountain to realize that the thefts had stopped. Relief that it was over stifled their disappointment in his not having been caught. And since there was little chance that they would frequent the Santa Fe galleries where Turner's work was displayed, it was unlikely that the connection would ever be made between the thief and what Turner was selling.

Six weeks earlier, Catherine had given birth to her first child--a little girl with round blue eyes and a head full of curly blond hair. She was just a bit of a thing, like a small, china doll, and they'd given her the name of Annie.

Today little Annie was taking her first trip out of Crying River. She would be traveling up the mountain above Camarune to her grandfather's house. It promised to be a fine day.

Luke DePriest was in love all over again. Between each load he took to their car, he had to stop by Annie's crib. He smiled as he looked down, thinking to himself that she looked a bit like a yellow caterpillar, wrapped tightly in her butter-colored blanket, with nothing visible but that little face and some wisps of curly hair. It was a bit frightening to know that one day she would be transformed into a young woman.

"Is everything loaded?" Catherine asked.

Luke jumped. Caught again, he thought, and then grinned.

"Everything but my two best girls," he said, and hugged her.

Catherine sighed, then relaxed, molding her body to his as he held her close.

"Are you up to this?" he asked.

She nodded. "It will be good to get out of the house. Besides, I'm sure it's beautiful at the cabin this time of year."

"One thing's for certain, it will be cooler," Luke said, and kissed a favorite spot below her ear.

"Why?" Catherine drawled. "Are you hot?"

"As a two-dollar pistol."

"Maybe you should turn up the air-conditioning."

He smirked. "The only thing I need to turn up ... or rather, on ... is you. However, until your checkup next week, that isn't happening, so don't remind me, okay?"

"You aren't the only one who's missing ... uh ... stuff."

His smirk spread.
