Alistar took a steadying breath as he stared straight ahead. What was happening? Why was he letting this little human push him around?

He’d come in here to set her straight, to make sure she didn’t go messing around with a wounded bear. Lucien was ready to bite. Always down for a fight. His beast was half-cocked, and had a hair trigger.

She was messing with fire, even if she hadn’t realized it when she’d made her offhand, smart-assed remark.

Liar.

His conscience was a bastard. Too fucking hung up on honesty.

Liar. Liar. Liar. You’re here because you wanted to make sure she’s okay.

She smelled better than okay. A tendril of fear, sure. The kind that the monster inside him secretly craved. But also…desire.

For once, her thoughts were slow, like molasses. Direct. She was trying to ignore how much his presence affected her. How much she wanted to climb onto his lap.

Join the club, sweetheart.

Her breasts lifted as she took a deep breath. Her mouth shifted into a line of concentration. She’d obviously not thought this through.

That made two of them.

He was pumped up from his run and the fight with Lucien. Being this close to her wasn’t his most brilliant idea. He’d thought of her and nothing else the whole time he’d been tearing up the treadmill. No matter how much he wanted her, he shouldn’t give in. He had a job to do, and so did she.

Sex would make everything messy.

Delightfully messy.

The instant he started to rise, she clasped his chin in her hand and leaned in with the washcloth.

“Sorry if this hurts,” she whispered, swiping his skin gently.

He hardly felt anything. She was so careful. “Doesn’t.”

She moved up from his cheek to the side of his eye. He studied her face, noting the flecks of crystalline blue in her eyes, the way her mouth opened the slightest bit. Somehow, she was conquering her fear of blood.

Maybe she felt guilty he’d been injured protecting her, or perhaps it was just that incredible focus allowing her to compartmentalize. Whatever the case, he was proud of her. Not only for tolerating his blood, but for standing up for herself.

Even if it’d nearly given him heart failure.

“I didn’t mean for any of that to happen. I didn’t realize he was so volatile.”

Alistar clamped his hands down on his knees so he wouldn’t reach for her. He couldn’t remember the last time a human went out of their way to help him.

His jaws ground together. He wasn’t so far gone that he thought all humans were bad. No group was singularly good or evil, just as no person was so one-sided. But it was easier to keep a hard-and-fast rule with himself.

But falling for Lexi’s kindness and her pretty face—that’d be a mistake.

And far messier than the best sex.

“Now you do,” he murmured. And hopefully she’d remember not to provoke the bear again.

She nodded, and her silky hair brushed her cheek, begging for his hands.

“Now I do. Thank you for stepping in.”

“Not a big deal. I needed to blow off some energy.
