Confessions of âEl Diabloâ
Street girls, addicts, infractions,
adolescence misdemeanants of possession.
These are the chores for patrolâ¦
My squadâs assignment was on a whole different level.
Serving warrants is a gig to catch them,
fetter suspects for detectives.
Today weâre after an incest rapist,
â¦imperative reasons to interrogate.
On fresh arrests, where respect is used,
some may be willing to talk with you.
To be âheardâ use the language theyâll understand,
words to construct communication.
From slang to pigeon, speaking Spanglish,
saying anything to gain their trust,
ahh the trickery of a cop.
Waving self-incrimination
before the education of jails confinement.
Prison culture teach one another,
courtroom, courtyard and street survival.
Calming presence, the voice of an actor
having recorded many confessions.
This was the day I interviewed the devil.
El diablo es un hombre de Nicaragua.
His name no longer belongs in this world,
now just an entry in my old journal.
Luciferâs monster from Nicaragua,
raping his grandmother and getting caught.
Taking me through his fantasy fodder,
of how he sustained a throbbing erection.
The use of his legs to spread her thighs,
pinning then breaking one of her arms.
Sadistically proud that he drew blood,
a wicked pretension to show off his weapon;
Tatuajes satanicos en su pene.
(A satanic tattoo on his penis).
Most will go through their careers
never hearing of such details.
Yet there are those of my peers
committed to seek out these deviants.
Listening too deeply to figure creeps out,
hard to avoid these guys not rubbing off.
Eating at your faith in humanity,
replaced with a jaded distrust of society.
Rapeâs never a capital offense; sentences are never enough.
El diablo would serve time in America, then deported to Nicaragua.
Hearing the screams of my instinctsâ¦
premonitions of him doing it again and again.
We, as police, should advocate for the victims,
sometimes it must be done by cheating.
It is that guilt I carried on this arrest
as a self-appointed-killer angle.
Feeling justified by moral proclivity,
I announced to the booking deputies;
This prisoner is charged with raping his grandmother.
With verbal clarity, and decibel level,
porously speaking near jail cell trusties.
Dimed him off in a subtle way
for the ears of inmates standing nearby.
Knowing âkitesâ would send out the message
as men see everything in captivity.
At times a community must police itself
in prisons thereâs little exception.
Not much later all were informed
the devil from Nicaragua was slain in prison.
Tried and sentenced by his peers
absent due process of our judicial system.
What is to happen after life I donât know.
If thereâs a God in the heavens steeped in forgiveness,
I wonât be judged harshly for this sin
â¦cuzz I was advocating for a seventy-eight-year-old victim.
