Chapter 7 – Allison

Derek glances up at the darkening sky, the air growing heavier with humidity.

"We should start heading back," he says gruffly. "Looks like another storm's rolling in."

I fall into step behind him as he leads the way back down the trail at a brisk pace. Despite his long strides, Derek keeps glancing over his shoulder to make sure I'm still following along okay.

"You don't have to keep checking on me, you know," I tease. "I'm right behind you!"

He shoots me a wry grin.

"Yeah, I know. But your legs are a lot shorter than mine. I have to make sure you can keep up with an old man's pace."

We continue our playful back-and-forth, but the peaceful mountain calm we enjoyed earlier is soon interrupted. The weather seems to shift out of nowhere—heavy storm clouds quickly swallow up the bright sunshine.

As the first cold droplets of rain fall, I can't help my gaze from wandering over Derek's broad form up ahead of me. His back is wide and powerfully muscled, the thin fabric of his shirt straining against the impressive physique underneath. He doesn't even seem bothered by the cold splashes peppering his exposed skin.

What started as just a light drizzle quickly escalates into a steady, drenching downpour. I glance up in surprise at how swiftly this mountain storm has rolled in, earning a face full of icy rain for my troubles.

A shiver runs through me as the cold droplets soak through my thin jacket, offering me little protection.

When we finally return to the garage, rain is pelting down in thick sheets, instantly drenching us both to the bone. Another violent tremor wracks my curvy body, and Derek immediately notices it, quickly closing the distance between us.

Without a word, his big arm wraps around my shoulders, pulling me flush against the solid warmth of his side. Despite the chill settling into my bones, I feel a distinct flutter low in my belly from being surrounded by his throbbing muscles.

I tilt my head back to look up at Derek, feeling an unexpected sense of security and...something more in his protective hold.

"I guess you really are my rugged mountain hero, huh?" I quip breathlessly, my voice shaking from the cold.

Derek just grumbles about being ill-prepared for not checking the weather first. But there's an unmistakable undercurrent of tenderness in his tone, and warmth blooms in my chest.

As another clap of thunder booms overhead, I instinctively press closer into the circle of Derek's embrace. He

nudges me forward with a gentle but insistent push toward the garage. "Go on, get inside before you catch your death out here," he urges, moving to withdraw his sheltering arm.

But as the freezing rain continues pounding relentlessly, I stumble slightly, the chill settling deep into my bones. Derek's arm instantly shoots back out to steady me against his solid frame.

"Inside, now," he commands gruffly, though his tone is laced with concern.

Nodding shakily, I do as instruct ed and start running as best I can through the muddy terrain toward the promise of refuge.
