Chapter Ten

Stryker

“‘Who’d have ever thought that this could be? True that he’s no Prince Charming, but there’s something in him that I simply didn’t see.’ Belle says.”

I pause in my reading of Beauty and the Beast as I hear Peyton shifting inside.

“Keep going,” she whispers.

I oblige her instantly. I’ve been trying to win her over. I took Roman’s advice, bringing her chocolate and other candy for the last two days. I also got her flowers because all the websites I looked up said it was a good gift.

I had my beta go to the bookstore last night and buy every princess and fairy tale book they had. Today we’re starting on Beauty and the Beast, and if I need them, I have enough books to last for the next month.

It’s too soon to tell if any of this is making a difference, but my wolf and I are hopeful. At the very least, she hasn’t sent us away. If this doesn’t work, I’m prepared to throw myself at her feet and beg her to take us back. I’ll grovel and agree to any terms she sets. I need my mate in my life.

I’ve been reading to her all morning. When I first sat down next to Roman’s front door, she wasn’t in the mood to talk like we did yesterday. I tried asking more about her time in First Coming but was met with one or two-word answers. I have a feeling Peyton regretted telling me so much that first day, but it gave me such hope. We’ll get there again. We have to.

But, since talking wasn’t an option, I cracked open the first book on the pile and started to read.

It’s almost lunchtime now, and my stomach is growling, but I don’t stop. Not until the door opens behind me, and I almost tumble backward through it.

“I uh, I made you a sandwich,” Peyton says softly. “I thought you might be hungry.”

She hands me a plate, and I take it with a grateful smile. I haven’t seen her precious face in days, and it does my heart good to have a glimpse of her now.

“Thanks.”

Peyton nods, taking a bite of her sandwich. Does this mean she wants to stay and eat with me? I turn my body so that we’re facing each other, wanting as much of her presence as she’s willing to give me.

God, she looks even more beautiful than I remember. Her hair seems brighter, more golden blonde, and her green eyes are shining like emeralds. Her cheeks are flushed a rosy pink, and my wolf whines when I notice that the blush stains her neck as well.

We want to bite her there. We want to sink our teeth into her skin and bond her to us forever, but I know she’s not ready for that yet. If we mark her, it must be her choice. It has to be because she wants it as much as we do.

“It's good,” I say in between bites. “Thank you,” I say as I finish off the sandwich.
