One concern that often comes up during times of reinvention is the desire for a roadmap. We’re all looking, it seems, for the answers to our biggest questions somewhere out there—questions like What needs to change here? and What do I really want for my life? But the answers are never going to be sitting out there waiting for you to find them. They’re not hidden in this book, in the next book you read or the next coach you hire, or the next job you take. There is a different approach, and it’s a lot simpler and less stressful. It will, over time, lead you back into yourself, which is where any solid reinvention needs to be based. Simply follow your interests. The problem comes when you’re struggling in a wrong-fit career, trying to put out fires in your life, burned out, or feeling burdened by the weight of your responsibilities—and you don’t have a clear sense of where your interests even are anymore. Or when you’ve relegated what interests you to the “maybe someday,” “wish I had time for,” or “when I get to” categories of your life. Connecting with your interests, whether that’s longtime hobbies or inklings that something sounds interesting to you, is a key component to revitalizing for several reasons. It connects you to yourself, to that still voice inside that is often drowned out. It stretches your courage muscles because it pushes you to trust your own instincts and yearnings. And it gives you an excellent place to begin.

So let’s rescue your interests and put them front and center. Reflecting on the work you’ve done in previous chapters, you may have already resurfaced an old interest or recognized interests you haven’t explored or pursued.
