Chapter 10

Raven woke in a strange room with no windows, in a bed that felt more like a giant goose down pillow, wearing clothes that didn’t belong to her but glided over her skin like butter.

Her skin!

Shooting upright, she slapped her palms over her breasts and stomach, inspecting herself, then yanked up one sleeve. Skin, not black fur. She was human again.

“Good morning.”

Speaking of her skin, she nearly leaped out of it at the friendly greeting. She hadn’t even noticed the insanely gorgeous redheaded woman sitting in an easy chair beside the bed. A book lay in her lap, her index finger tucked between the pages to mark where she’d stopped reading.

The woman smiled disarmingly and held up her free hand. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to startle you.” She had a smooth but husky voice that made Raven think of caramel wrapped in dark chocolate.

“Who are you?”

“My name’s Siron. I’m Jupiter’s mate.” Her yellow-green eyes popped against her flawless tan skin.

“Jupiter?”

Siron picked up a bookmark sitting on the nightstand and slipped it into the book where her finger had been. “Priest’s father. I think you met Priest?”

Raven recalled the long-haired blond and nodded.

Setting the book on the nightstand, Siron offered her another amiable smile. One that reached her eyes and instantly made Raven relax. “I guess you would call me Priest’s stepmother. That’s the term humans use, right? I’m not his biological mother, but I try to fill in as best as I can.”

Raven wanted to respond with a sardonic, “Yeah, whatever,” but she didn’t want to be rude to this woman. Siron was clearly trying to put Raven at ease in a situation that would have made even the Buddha lose his shit.

“How did I get here?” Her gaze flitted around the minimally adorned but elegant room.

“Rameses brought you here. After the attack, you had a bit of a spell.” That must have been a nice way to say she’d freaked the fuck out and fainted like a sissy. “Rameses wanted you here at the compound, where it’s safe.”

“Where’s Barrett?” She was still pissed that he hadn’t given her some kind of heads-up about what had gone down tonight, but he was the one part of all this she was familiar with, and in spite of his betrayal, she wanted him with her. Just the thought of his arms around her calmed her, and, right now, more than anything else, she needed to be calmed.

“With the others,” Siron said.

“The others? You mean Rameses and Priest?”

“Well, there are more than just those two, but yes, he’s with them as well.”

More than Rameses and Priest? Just how many more were there?

Raven gave Siron a quick once-over. “So why are you here?”

Siron seemed nice, but Raven wasn’t taking anything at face value right now. Even serial killers were considered nice people by their neighbors and coworkers.

“Are you guarding me?” she asked.

Siron stood. She wore shimmering leisure pants made of fabric that appeared to change between dark green and dark blue as it moved.
