CHAPTER X

MONDAY MORNING,

JUST PAST MIDNIGHT, May 28th

New Hope, Pennsylvania

During the tedious drive through the narrow country roads to Doylestown Hospital, Chris’s facial slash had been treated as had been the cut to his palm. Although both wounds were serious, neither was life threatening. The paramedics were more concerned with the bruising on his throat and torso, saying that they could indicate internal bleeding, although his blood pressure seemed stable at the time.

Dave had not moved, not even blinked since he got into the rescue vehicle. His bloodshot, puffy eyes saw the lines running from plastic bags into Chris’s arm, saw the butterfly bandages holding his palm and cheek together, heard the beeping of the machines that monitored his vital signs as well as the wailing of the siren, but none of it registered. He was numb to any and all external stimulus. One thought dominated his entire being as he held onto Chris’s uninjured hand: don’t leave me!

Detective Scott left Brett and Anthony after advising them to leave as soon as possible in the morning, fearful that whoever tried killing Chris and saw Brett could still be around, waiting for another opportunity to strike. “He might even try to find you yet again tonight.” Scott looked around. “Can you move to another room?”

“I don’t know if there’s another one available.” Anthony replied. “I’ll go see.”

“Good, that way you’ll be safe tonight.” Scott bid them good-night and left, softly closing the door behind him.

“Hey!” Anthony nudged Brett who’d drifted off. “Let’s see about another room.”

Groggily, Brett asked, “Do you still have the key to your old room?”

Anthony shook his head. “Had to turn it in when I moved in here. Come on, get up.”

He pulled Brett by both arms, but couldn’t budge him. “Honey, come on! We have to get a different room.”

“Do we really? I mean, what are the odds of him coming back tonight?”

Anthony gripped him under the arms. “You are not staying here tonight, young man!”

“All right, all right! Let me get a few things from the bathroom.”

“I’ll go see about another room. Be right back.” Anthony stepped out into the patio, but before closing the door told Brett to put the security latch on and throw the dead bolt. His voice muffled by the sounds filtering into the room from the other guests, Brett only heard the phrase; “be right back.”

Dave watched as the hospital staff rushed to and took the gurney carrying the love of his life into surgery. They’d been notified by the driver of their ETA and were standing by, ready to do what they do best, save lives.

“Mr. Taylor?” a voice called to Dave. “Please come with me.” The nurse led him to a waiting lounge in the opposite direction. He craned his neck to keep Chris in view as long as he could.

“Can I get you anything? Coffee? Water?” she asked after seating Dave in the waiting room.

“I could use a bottle of cold water.”

She patted his hand and smiled.
