After several minutes, I couldn’t hear anything. All the sounds of the city were gone.

I drew in a breath letting my shoulders relax and my feet to slow their pace slightly. The stink of the tunnel was already less noticeable.

It wasn’t long before echoes of someone descending the ladder filled the tunnel. The sharp sounds bounced down the walls until they stung my ears and made my heart painfully skip a beat.

I sucked in a breath that squeezed my lungs. They were so desperate to get me back that they’d come down looking for me. My brother was relentless. He’d do anything to see me suffer.

I ran as fast as my feet would carry me through the water. They’d hear me splashing but once I got out there, I’d be able to disappear. My brother would be overwhelmed. Frightened. And whoever he had with him would be too. I’d just keep running from the wall into the night fast and far away.

I could get away. They wouldn’t catch me.

My brother wanted me gone… and I was going to be gone. They’d give up the chase. Maybe they were just doing it for appearances. To satisfy my father.

The problem was they weren’t stopping. I could see a light coming down the tunnel behind me. It was faint but it was there.

Someone had been closer behind me than I’d thought. They must have seen me coming down into the tunnels or maybe they noticed the cover I hadn’t been able to get back on.

I fumbled around for the knife I’d stuck in my backpack trying not to stab myself in the process. My fingers wrapped around the handle. There wasn’t anywhere to hide.

“Sadie!” a voice called out.

“No,” I gasped as I turned and started running again.

My heart was pounding so hard it shook my body. I couldn’t let them catch me.

“Sadie, wait!”

The wetness inside my shoes made it feel like I was running on mud. Each step dragged me down and significantly slowed me. The back of my feet were raw from the back of my shoe rubbing into my damp sock.

I couldn’t make my feet go faster. It felt like whoever was behind me was gaining on me. They had more energy. They were determined.

I’d have to fight them. I wouldn’t be able to hide anywhere in the tunnel and I couldn’t outrun them.

Beads of sweat rolled down the back of my neck. I could hear footsteps. They were closer. It was like I was trapped in a dream and I couldn’t go fast enough.

Except it wasn’t a dream. I was living my nightmare.

A light touched my leg and I took an awkward step to the side as if being touched by the beam had hurt. It flashed the wall to my left and then bounced over to the right. I dipped, ducked and dodged knowing it was just a matter of time before they caught up to me.

“Sadie! Please, wait!” the male voice called.

I kept moving even though I couldn’t recall the last time Ezra had used the word ‘please.
