NINE

NYALL

Bonding ceremonies varied depending on the avatar guiding the proceedings. Some were perfunctory, some elaborate. This one, it seemed, was as sensual as Diaosa Herself. Lucky me, I was the only one of us four who was dressed for the occasion. My suit was a four-thousand-dollar Sali Fanique. The thread county on my shirt was astronomical and my cuff links were white gold. The shoes, oh sweet avatar, my shoes. Genuine alligator, handmade by Guerrero Ramon himself. My modeling career had been a good time while it lasted, and though I was glad it was over, I was also grateful for the connections I’d made in the fashion world.

Designers still sent me clothes, shoes, boots, jewelry, hats, and more and I accepted them all.

Well, except for one yellow eyesore. That one went right into the trash.

“Nyall,” Cade said. “You got it?”

“Of course.” I pulled the knife from my shoulder sheath and passed it over to Diaosa, then grinned at Sloane who was looking gob smacked. “We had to bring you something for the ceremony.”

She made a face. “I didn’t bring you guys anything.” She looked annoyed with herself. “Sorry. I just didn’t—”

Cade took her hand. “You don’t have to be sorry. Things are different in East Bay. It’s customary to give a gift.”

She scoffed. “Yeah, it’s customary here, too. I just forgot, but thanks for trying to make me feel better.”

Sloane reminded me of a prickly pear. All sharp, poky things to protect her squishy interior. Though I doubted she’d appreciate me calling her squishy.

Diaosa stood at the center of the carpet after we’d moved the table out of the way. A vivid orange glow surrounded Her, snaking around Her arms, legs, and torso. “Raster, Mother of this child before me, we call upon You to bless this union between Your child and these four ShadowGuard so that they may protect Your people and keep You safe from complete disconnection.” She nodded at us.

We took each others’ hands and power jumped from one to another to another. My lightning leapt from my control and I shouted a warning, but it didn’t hurt my brothers or my new Hunter. Their eyes lit up with blue energy, the bolts crackled between us, my hair stood on end. I wondered if the ecstasy on my brothers’ faces mirrored my own.

A darker swirl of power rose in me—Judah. Knife-like energy—Cade. Then silence. Patience. Power. Bane.

What would Sloane feel like?

Diaosa began speaking again, though this time her words were Raster’s and I didn’t know what she said, only that they caressed my skin like a lover’s fingers. Sloane’s mouth was open, and she looked drunk or high off the energy filling, filling, filling her.

When the energy began flowing from her to us, to me, it wasn’t enough. Flames licked at my flesh, ice froze my marrow. I wanted more of it, but it stopped abruptly like a hurricane wind cut off and I staggered, we all staggered, the ripple running from me to my brothers, to Sloane.
