Luke told Kathy that time would provide the answers, but it sure didn't do anything for her anxiety, she thought. Especially while waiting
She accepted she wasn't a patient person, but it had been more than a week since she had talked to Nate and he had planned to meet with C.J. Burbank about things that had happened years ago and she was getting antsy.
As she fixed a bagel, she decided she would make some calls if Nate didn't contact her by the end of the day.
Her thoughts were interrupted by a knock on the door. She peered through the window and smiled when she saw Lake on the other side. "What are you doing here?"
"I had a few errands to run, thought I'd pick up some doughnuts and hope I could bum a cup of coffee in trade for some sugar and starch."
Kathy led him in. "I was thinking about what you told me a few days ago. About being patient for news about Burbank."
"Uh-uh," Lake said. "We're not going to talk about Nate's investigation right now. Now is the time to laugh and relax."
Kathy pouted playfully. "Spoilsport. But since you brought doughnuts, I guess I'll play nice." While she waited for the Keurig machine to finish Lake's coffee, she got a tea for herself. "So, what's on your agenda for the day?"
Lake bit into a glazed doughnut. "Not too much. I've got to take a shark to the city in a few hours then I'm going to just take a few hours to cruise out over the Atlantic looking for whale pods. It's a major source of income during the season, taking the tourists out to see the whales"
"Don't you get worried about flying so far out over the water?"
"Not really. I've got the floats on the plane so if I'm ever forced down the plane can stay up. I always carry a life raft and life jackets."
His answer satisfied her, but still Kathy shuddered. The thought of being stranded out in the ocean with little more than a rowboat didn't exactly make her feel safe.
After breakfast, Lake said goodbye and headed off on his adventure for the day. Kathy did the dishes quickly and decided to take her bike to the motel.
The five-block ride invigorated her, and by the time she reached the motel, she was ready to focus on working on finishing the final parts of the office.
Propping her bike against the counter in the office, she ran her hand over the new surface. She was still going to call Nate.
Kathy yelped a short while later when a hand slapped down on her shoulder. She spun and found herself face to face with Marie.
Marie reached over and tugged at the earbuds that were plugged in Kathy's ears. "Hon, you've got to keep the music down a bit. You're going to ruin your hearing keeping it up on blast like that."
Kathy turned her iPod off, as she laughed. "Working with power tools requires me to keep it loud.
