Chapter Nineteen
Wade threw another ball of trash into the far corner wastebasket and yes, pretended like it was a basketball. No one watched. No one was around. The nine-to-fivers had left for the day. He still had a couple more files to get through to meet his daily goal.
The door opened, the wind whipping it all the way back as Jack arrived.
âThis better be good.â He looked around at the empty office. âAnd hopefully on the books this time.â
âI should be back out there, fighting criminals or helping on one of the weirdest cases of a lifetime,â he said aloud, instead of just thinking it for once.
Sick of sitting behind a desk, Wade was living vicariously through his fellow rangers. Waiting on a call or information. Wanting to be right about his hunch. Setting up meetings between Slate and Jack.
âWhat you need to do is keep your nose clean until the major says otherwise,â Jack told him. âWe can handle things. Even the weird stuff.â
The door opened again. Slate escorted a woman who must have been Vivian Watts to his desk across from Wade.
âYou know I could run some of those names Heath sent you.â
âNo!â both Slate and Jack said together. They startled Vivian and both gave him a look like he was crazy.
âI can work the list,â Jack said. âIâll be patrolling most of those neighborhoods anyway.â
Obviously, Slate had already spoken to him about what needed to be done.
The outer office door burst open and Heath marched in, heavy boots on the worn linoleum. âIs my TV still in one piece?â he asked Slate, referring to the fight that had taken place in their living room.
âAs a matter of fact, itâs better than my head,â Slate replied.
Vivian Watts sat on the edge of the conversation, obviously paying attention and purposely restraining her opinion. It was obvious since she had eyes only for her hero...Slate.
Heath gave her a strange look. Maybe he recognized the shirt she wore was one of Slateâs. But what was strange about that? All her clothes were gone in a fire. And yet, Slate seemed preoccupied until Jack had mentioned the list they were waiting on from Heath. Then Slate had been quick to jump in that it had been Vivianâs idea.
Dammit, Slate. Youâre falling for her?
âHave you found anything significant with Allan Pinkstonâs background check?â Jack asked.
âI guess Slate hasnât gotten to the Ps on the sleep-study list.â
âPinkstonâs on it?â Slate asked. âThis doesnât make sense.â
âDo you think heâs Subject Nineteen?â Vivian asked, turning all the menâs heads toward her. Which in turn had them all looking at Slate.
âMaybe we should talk in the hall?â Jack suggested.
âBe right back, Vivian.â Slate almost cooed.
âStay.â Jack looked at Wade with the direct order.
âLooks like Iâm keeping you company for a while,â Wade said to Vivian. âIâm Wade Hamilton and I assume youâre Vivian. Guess they forgot we havenât met. You getting along with Slate okay?â
He already knew the answer. Her blush confirmed his suspicions as his fellow rangers disappeared into the hallway.
