Encourage self-talk. Another reason why imaginative play is good for building self-regulation is that it often involves the kids’ talking to themselves or their playmates in a way that directs their actions. They learn self-control by talking to themselves in order to guide their own behavior (rather than always relying on Mom or Dad to guide them). Encouraging kids to talk to themselves and listen to that “little voice in their head” facilitates the development of self-regulation. When my kids do something that they know is wrong, I often ask them, “Did you hear a voice in your head telling you not to say that mean thing?” Making them aware of the fact that they have a “know system” that will help them overrule their impulses (say, to hit their sister) is a first step.
