OPTING OUT

By saying no to activity, you are actually inviting other aspects of life to the forefront permitting the possibility that the quieter, less vivid, less exciting activity may have a deeper nutritional value.

RUSSELL BRAND

I’m no longer interested in trying to be the World’s Best Mom. I’m aiming for World’s Okayest Mom.

I’m also no longer interested in trying to raise perfect kids. Because (a) it’s not possible, and (b) in my own experience parents trying to raise perfect kids end up raising kids with an anxiety disorder. Ask me how I know. I’m content with being a “good enough mom” and raising good enough kids.

There are a number of things that I’ve decided to opt out of, because I believe that is the only way to sanely do this parenting thing. If we say yes to every supermom standard of conduct, we end up too busy to do any of it well, and certainly too busy to actually enjoy it.

So here are some of the things I’ve opted out of. This list might be different for you—but make your list or you will drown on the path to the perfectly cut crustless sandwich. In this village of motherhood, we don’t have to judge each other for making different choices. I can be obsessed with making sure my kids know how to cut an onion properly and you can decide that takeout every night is just fine. We’re both good enough moms. And we’ve got to give each other space to parent differently.
