Chapter Fifteen

Ichabod had received a message before leaving Marleigh’s. He’d been told to grill her—although he wouldn’t be so harsh and actually grill—about whether this was a setup. Whatever had happened for the twins to think that, he didn’t know, but he had to follow orders no matter what his feelings were towards the woman. Even if his dream came true and they got married, he’d still have to ask her things if he was told to. And keep certain Cardigan secrets.

She said no lies…

But she’d have to understand that sometimes, he’d have to tell them.

They were stuck in a traffic jam, although the snakes of cars on the dual carriageway moved forward, albeit slowly. His ankle ached from continually applying the brake. He could get off at the next junction but had to wait for the slip road to appear.

May as well get talkin’ tae her now.

“I have tae ask ye somethin’. I’ll say it straight out. The Brothers want tae know whether ye’re spinnin’ them a yarn. Are ye really in this wid David and he’s been told tae ambush the twins?”

“What?” She glanced across at him, a sharp twist of her head. “I can’t believe you’ve just asked me that.”

“It wouldn’t be unheard of. Husband-and-wife team.”

“Oh, so I just wrote all that stuff in my diary—years ago—in case this sort of situation came up, did I?”

“Listen, I believe ye, but ye have tae understand I follow orders, and that’s all I’m doin’. I’ll let them know I trust ye. Goin’ forward, there will be things I have tae say, things I can’t tell ye, and ye need tae accept that and not badger me about it. Workin’ for The Brothers has its own set of rules outside yours. Ye said no lies, and I get that, but ye must understand that what they say comes above what ye say.”

“I do understand. David has secrets in his day job, too. I wouldn’t expect you to spill Cardigan business. I’m not going to play the card that you’re hiding things from me, because you’ve told me before we go forward. All I want is to know exactly where I stand, and you’re giving it to me, so I can hardly moan about it later, can I.”

“Thank ye.”

The cars ahead had come to a stop, so he halted and held his phone low in his lap to send a quick text, conscious he could get done by the police for doing so if a camera caught him.

Ichabod: She’s not dodgy, I’d put money on it.

He got a reply back quickly.

GG: Good. But we’ll be on the lookout for anything odd anyway.

Ichabod: Agreed. Just in case.

GG: Yep. Fucking bored. You?

Ichabod: We’re in a traffic jam. Thank God we left early.

GG: Is it likely to fuck things up?

Ichabod: No. GPS shows the red road warning stops not far ahead. It’s green after that.

With no further response, he tucked the phone between his thighs.

“All sorted?” Marleigh asked. “Got the go-ahead to trust me?”

“Yep.”

She rested her head back.
