When running, not all music is the same. If we want music to heighten our senses (to enhance a demanding workout) we would probably choose something upbeat and high tempo. Likewise, when we want to focus mentally during the day, the type of music also makes a big difference. Regular music from our favourite artists may work but is unlikely to be as effective as scientifically developed music for the purpose of increasing concentration levels. Behavioural studies and EEG (electroencephalography) experiments show improvements in mental performance from listening to particular types of music. Listening to concentration music has a strong effect on brain activity and is highly effective at creating different mental states.
By listening to music when running we can often turn up the dial and find another level of performance. Similarly, by experimenting with music when we want to focus during the day, we can boost our mental performance just when we need it. We are not only shutting out distractions but sharpening our powers of concentration at the same time. When we are coasting in a run it feels great knowing we can select another gear and increase our pace whenever we choose to do so. Likewise, knowing we can flick a performance switch by listening to music – to reach a higher state of mental performance (as and when we need it) – is equally powerful.
