Chapter 4: Seeing Through Different Eyes

“Why don’t you just merge Silicon and CanMaze?” It was Vera who came up with the idea, 3 months later, as she stared at the papers spread out over the desk. Demetri didn’t even think that she was paying attention; she had been sitting on the couch the whole time, applying her makeup for that night’s charity ball and watching Kraig play with her daughter, Lily, on the floor. Kraig, the youngest of the Swaskisoni brothers, certainly had the energy to chase after a three-year-old all day, and he did it with gusto. He wasn’t as burdened as his brothers were; he didn’t yet carry the weight of the world on his shoulders. One day, he would likely inherit the whole empire. He was 15 years younger than Drago; his parents last miracle before they passed away. His brothers tried to keep him protected as much as they could, letting him immerse himself in only the tip of the iceberg that was their business. However, Demetri was the first to admit they might have gone about that wrong. Instead of creating a happy child, they had created a monster; a firecracker of a young man with a mischievous grin who practically had to be tied up to keep out of trouble. But because he was good with Lily, Vera somehow thought Kraig was an angel, and scolded Demetri every time he reprimanded him. In response, Kraig loved Vera and listened to her every word, which was a miracle, just like the way she handled Nikoli. Nikoli seemed to think it was he and Vera against the world, but he certainly had less outbursts.

“We can’t…” Demetri said, distantly, as her idea began to take shape in his mind. But even as he said it, he trailed off. “Can we?”

“They could help each other. “Vera stood up, the long evening dress she was wearing flowing onto the floor as she walked over to where he and Drago were bent over a table. “You two are always babbling about how they complement each other. Merge them and they can help each other at half the cost.”

Demetri glanced to Drago, whose eyes were darting over the pages. Only when Drago was focused on business did he see a touch of the brother that he used to know before the depression hit, before the demons took over. Drago took a step back, glancing at Vera.

“We could,” he said, at last. “If their boards can come to agreement. We can merge them, rather than have one acquire the other. Which,” he took a deep breath, “would be a lot of work. But yes, worth it in the end.”

“It’s all about helping each other, Drago,” Vera said, softly, and he managed a small smile at her.

Since she had moved in, it was like she and Lily were missing pieces of a puzzle. Their estrogen created a balance in the house, kept things below a breaking point, and created harmony instead of chaos.
