Chapter 3

The first two months in the city were the hardest, as I tried to find work and provide for my baby. I found that I was constantly tired from watching my back and not having enough money to feed myself properly, but I managed to scrape by and Lisa went unaffected through it all and that to me was all that mattered.

During my third month in the city I managed to find a job, at a small dingy bar, as their singer. I have always loved singing and often sang in the local bar in my old town. The manager of the dingy bar offered me the job, as soon, as I opened my mouth to sing. It wasn’t great money or great hours, but it was enough to make sure that Lisa and I were going to be okay.

I had been working at the bar for a few weeks, before anything notable happened. It had been a quiet Tuesday night and the bar was starting to empty. I wasn’t complaining about the lack of custom though, as it meant I would be able to finish early and get back to Lisa, who was with her babysitter. That changed though when a small group of rowdy guys walked into the bar and my boss gave me the signal to start singing.

I watched the men, as they ordered their drinks and sat down. None of them were paying attention to me singing, they couldn’t have been, because their voices were so loud I could barely hear myself think, never mind hear myself sing. After the song had finished I stepped down from the stage and grabbed myself a bottle of water from behind the bar.

“Hey.” Said a smooth voice from behind me that made me jump and turn around in shock. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you.” The man said, as he watched the expression on my face.

“It’s fine.” I said shortly, as I took a drink from my bottle. He was a handsome guy, which broad shoulders and tanned skin. His eyes seemed to glow with the colour of honey and I thought about how it matched his smooth voice. He was smiling at me, a perfectly natural smile, which seemed to complete his face and make him look impossibly perfect. “Can I help you?” I asked, as he just stood there looking at me.

“You sure can darling, I’d like a drink.” He said. I listened to his voice, which seemed to glide through the air and into my ears effortlessly.

“Sorry.” I said shaking my head. “I’m not the barmaid.”

“But you are behind the bar and you do work here right?” He said with a bemused expression.

“I’m the singer, I don’t pull pints.” I said with a little agitation. I had already told him no, I couldn’t understand why he didn’t just get the actual barmaids attention, who was currently collecting glasses and flirting with one of the men at the table.

“You certainly are a singer, you sounded beautiful up there.
