CHAPTER TWELVE

THE QUIET, QUIET

Wake, Clem Usher….

Clem’s eyes fluttered open.

“Where are we?” She peeked out from Snowlight’s blue, furry shoulder.

Look and see.

They stood at the edge of a glacier with the dark-blue icefield behind them. The rising sun peeked from behind a mountain.

At their feet, far below, lay a beautiful valley.

Suddenly, sunlight spilled over the mountain and shone across the waving green grass. Each blade held the sun, and the valley shone.

It was the loveliest place Clem had ever seen.

Welcome to the Quiet, Quiet, Clem Usher.

“The Quiet, Quiet?” Clem whispered. The wind blew the grass in the valley below. The sun rose higher, and she felt a warmth in her feet, in her hands, all around her.

What do you see? Snowlight asked.

“It’s a beautiful green valley,” Clem whispered.

Hmmmm. I see a warm mountain cave beneath shining stars.

“But how?” Clem looked down into the valley. She wanted to run down to it, but it was too far below her. “How can I see a beautiful green valley, but you see a cave?”

I am not you, Clem Usher. Your quiet place is different from mine.

Clem had more questions, but suddenly many voices broke into her thoughts.

… a Small One!

… from the Small One place!

… why have you called us?

Clem turned to see three Snow Creatures behind Snowlight. They were all very like Snowlight, but not as big.

Clem Usher is with me, Snowlight said.

… but she is a Small One …

… she is barely blue …

… why is she here?

Snowlight answered them: Clem Usher has the words. She may be able to help us….

But the three Snow Creatures seemed unsure.

… what words?

… she is too newly blue!

… too young to help!

Clem held up a hand, and the Snow Creatures took a step back. Clearly, they weren’t used to Small Ones. At least not so close.

She spoke to them. “I am small. And I am young. But … I can help! What do you want me to do?”

The Snow Creatures stared, and their tongues of fire gently stroked the air. They were afraid of Clem.

Snowlight spoke. I have brought us here, Clem Usher, for you to ask the Quiet, Quiet a question.

“What question?”

Snowlight closed her eyes, then opened them. Is there a way to stop your kind, the Small Ones, from eating the mountain?

Clem thought for a moment. “Eating the mountain? What do you mean? Wait. Do you mean … mining? You want me to ask how to stop the mine at the Work Centre?”

Snowlight nodded. The look on Snowlight’s face almost hurt. The Snow Creature was so hopeful, so ancient, and yet, in a strange way, so innocent, too.

Clem considered. She thought of the dream in the cave after drinking the blue soup, and the pain in her feet as something dug into them far below.

Did Snowlight feel pain from the mine?

And … was there a way to stop the Commander, the Officers, the Work Centre from making the Blue Brick™?

They were powerful. They had mined the rock for a long time. They wanted to keep mining it for a long time to come, even though Clem wasn’t sure exactly why.
