Chapter 9

When Riordan came home from school that afternoon, he didn’t find Sam in the house. He headed to the back door, thinking she might be digging around in the tree roots for that necklace, but when he opened it up, the sight of his back garden made him stop short.

His completely barren back garden. Holy. Shit. Everything was gone. The weeds, yes, but also the scraggly plants that had been there when he’d first moved in, the rocks he’d piled in the corner by the fence…even the grass.

All it was…was dirt.

“Well, fuck me,” he breathed, standing and simply staring in awe at the cleared space.

“Okay, but I’ll need to shower first.” Sam’s voice came from over on the side of the house, and he looked up to her walking toward him from James’s fence line.

She was rumpled and dirty and she had a smudge of mud on her cheek, but all his body could think was, Christ yes let’s go.

There was no use denying it. He wanted to. Ever since that first night she’d slept in his house, he’d wanted to put himself in her.

No, wait. It was the first moment he’d opened the door to her, that morning when she’d shown up out of the blue like some gift from a minor god who enjoyed fucking with people’s lives in fun and interesting ways. Because she was fun and interesting, wasn’t she? She was certainly creative, fearless, and a little bonkers. But she was willing to take Mum to a strip joint and befriend an old horticulturalist, too, and somehow despite the odd way they’d started, he found himself starting to actually like her.

She’d made him breakfast and nosed through his studio and made him feel like maybe he wasn’t so alone in this world.

But he couldn’t well respond with, I’m ready and then whip his wire out. She hadn’t even been supposed to hear him say those words.

Fuck me.

She had to have been joking with her response.

Right?

He nodded to himself. Yes. Definitely joking. Because he might explode right here if he thought she might have been even a little bit serious.

He tipped his chin out at the garden. “Looks bang up proper. Have you found the necklace?”

She blushed at that, which he found funny. So making sex jokes wouldn’t even have her batting an eyelash, but talking about her grandmother’s necklace was cause for embarrassment?

He found himself liking her quirky ways.

“I—actually, I haven’t done any digging for it today. We’ve just been cleaning up and planning and—”

“We?”

“Oh, uh…James and I. He just went back to his place. I tried to tempt him with dinner but he said he wanted to get some rest in before tomorrow.”

He frowned. “What’s tomorrow?”

But she just shrugged and said, rather mysteriously, “Something big. But it’s a surprise. You’ll see.”

He shoved his hands in his pockets so that he wouldn’t be tempted to grab her and kiss her for being so deliciously impish. “Has anyone ever told you you’re insane?” he asked instead. But he was smiling when he said it, and she smiled back.
