For years, Rebekka had been able to lead a life free from any entanglements with the law. Even though her dad had had his run-ins with the constabulary, no member of the family had ever done time, which was quite amazing when you thought about it since they had been operating on the wrong side of the law for all those same years. And now that Dad was old and ready for the nursing home and Mom was the same way, and the younger generation had taken over, she knew they were facing a great risk.
Like in any business, the transition from one generation to the next always represents a danger. Their dad had often warned them about it and had told them to be extra careful when the time came that he announced his retirement and handed the reins of the family business to his two sons and one daughter. But even he, a clever operator, hadnât expected that it would actually be Rebekka who would jeopardize them all, since she had always been the clever one. The careful one. The one who was destined to take over from her dad.
And now this mess, which was entirely of her own making. If she hadnât decided to help the toy store guy hide that body, this would never have happened. And if she hadnât tussled with that annoying little twerp Freddie Tottman, he wouldnât even know what she looked like. Lucky for her she always wore her wig when she was out and about attending to her familyâs business interests.
And if they thought she was going down without a fight they had another thing coming. The family might have lost a large part of their stash, but she knew exactly where she could get more. Plenty more. An endless supply, in fact. And even though they might have to lay low for a while, this wasnât the end.
She glanced in at that annoying man who she held responsible for much of the trouble the family now found itself in and had to resist the urge to climb in through his window and murder him in his bed right then and there. She knew it would provide a sense of satisfaction, but ultimately would only serve to get her into more trouble than it was worth.
At least she knew where he lived now.
She got back into the car, and as Dirk raced away with squealing tires, he asked, âIs it him?â
She nodded. âYup, itâs him all right. Freddie Tottman. Still lives with his folks, apparently.â
âWe canât touch himâyou know that, right?â
âOh, I know that,â she said as she glanced out of the window. âIâm not stupid, Dirk.â
âSo what are you going to do?â asked her husband.
âIâm going to let some time pass. And once he thinks heâs safe, Iâm going to strike. Iâm going to make him pay for what he did to us, that annoying nitwit.â
âI didnât mean the kid. I meant the business,â he said with a touch of irritation.
