CHAPTER 19
âWhat was all the fuss about, do you think?â asked Marcie Tapper as she watched from her front room window the scene playing out on the street outside. âThere was a lot of yelling and shouting, and now Chase has crossed the street and entered the Dunlop place.â
âNo idea,â said Ted. Even though he often supported his wifeâs obsession with their neighbors, he wasnât feeling in the mood to spy on them right now. He was worried about Rufus, who had been behaving strangely lately. And since he probably loved that dog more than life itselfâand had even been accused by his wife of caring more for the mutt than he did for her or their two daughtersâhe hoped that he wasnât sick or in any kind of distress. Even though Rufus was by no means an old dog, he wasnât a puppy anymore either, and so it was probably understandable that he would suffer some of the drawbacks associated with life as an adult dog.
He turned away from the window, where indeed a strange scene had been playing out, and decided to check in on Rufus. He found the sheepdog in the backyard, where he seemed to be guarding the garden house for some reason. Oddly enough, every time Ted would approach the structure, Rufus put his front paws on his chest and barked up a storm. Then he would go and get his ball and drop it at his masterâs feet, eager for Ted to play with him.
He didnât mind playing catch with the lovable mutt, but what he wanted more than anything was to get rid of some of the mites that had been attaching themselves to his precious rose bushes. And if Rufus wasnât going to let him anywhere near his garden house, that was never going to happen. The only reason he could think that the dog was so eager to play fetch was that he wasnât feeling well, and so he had already called Vena and set up an appointment to take a look at the sheepdog.
He now picked up the ball and threw it across the hedge and into the Poole backyard. That should give Rufus pause, he thought.
The dog shot away like a bullet from a gun and crashed through the little gate he and Tex had agreed to install so they had access to each otherâs backyards, in case one or the other went on vacation and needed his neighbor to keep an eye on things.
And while Rufus was thusly engaged in trying to retrieve his ball, Ted quickly set foot for his garden house. He was going to zap those darn mites to kingdom come if it was the last thing he did. They should never have touched his rose bushes! The moment he opened the garden house, though, he was surprised at the bizarre smell that hung there. And when he flicked on the light, he saw to his surprise that his precious garden house was filled with birds.
