CHAPTER 22
âWhere can we find those chickens!â Vesta cried as she helplessly flapped her arms.
âMaybe pay a visit to the chicken farm?â Scarlett suggested.
âYou know we canât afford to pay those prices,â Vesta countered. She had looked online, and she simply didnât have that kind of money.
âWhat did Alec say?â
âHe was no help whatsoever,â she said. âAs was to be expected. He doesnât want me to succeed, thatâs the plain truth of it.â
âHave you talked to Tex?â
âTex? Why should I talk to Tex?â
âItâs his backyard. If youâre going to raise chickens you will need to get his permission sooner or later.â
It was an aspect of the matter that she hadnât considered yet. âYou know, Scarlett. You may have a point.â
âOf course I have a point.â
âNo, but I mean, Tex is a doctor, right?â
âLast time I looked.â
âSo he probably knows a lot about chickens.â
Scarlett didnât see the connection, but Vesta had a plan. Well, another plan at least. And so they set foot for the doctorâs office, hoping to catch Tex between two patients. When they arrived there, the waiting room was full to capacity, but that didnât stop her from walking straight up to the counter and taking a seat behind it. She picked up the phone. âTex?â
âWhere have you been!â the doc called out.
âWhat do you know about chickens?â she asked, not deterred by the hostility of his tone.
âYou should have been behind that counter hours ago!â
âI had something more important to do,â she said, waving away his idle chatter about showing up for work on time. It was such an old-fashioned notion. Who had the time to show up on time? The truth was that after she had seen Tedâs chickens, she hadnât been able to think about anything else, and had totally forgotten she was supposed to assume receptionist duties that day. âChickens, Tex,â she interrupted him when he was about to go off on a tangent.
There was silence on the other end of the line, and all of a sudden the door to the inner office flew open and her son-in-law appeared. He didnât look happy to see her, and for a moment had trouble assuming his usual bedside manner when addressing the room full of patiently waiting patients. He stalked over to Vesta and leaned in, breaking into furious whispers. âWhatâs all this about chickens!â
âYou were right about Ted,â she told him. She took out her phone and showed him the pictures she had snapped of those gorgeous Silkie chickens. âHeâs got a dozen of them and pretty soon there will be plenty more.â
âMy God, theyâre pretty,â said Tex as he took her phone and scrolled through the pictures. âWhat are they?â
âSilkie chickens. Very rare and very expensive.â
Tex gulped a little, and she could tell that he was as absorbed by Tedâs new hobby as she was. She and Tex didnât have a lot in common, but what they did share was an abiding dislike for their neighbor. âWhere can we get them?â he asked, proving that he was already thinking along the same lines as she was.
