Chapter 24
The house that Sergio Sorbet had builtâor rather boughtâwas a grand mansion in true Hollywood style. I imagined that Steven Spielberg was a regular guest, and so was Tom Hanks and Harrison Ford. They probably landed their helicopter on the private helipad Sergio had installed between the house and his private beach. Or maybe they flew in their private plane and landed it at the private airstrip nearby. All in all, it all sounded very⦠private. Then again, when youâre as rich and famous as Mr. Sorbet, you donât like mere mortals sticking their noses into your private affairs.
The movies that had made Sorbet famous were very much in evidence wherever we looked: a large Zeus statue dominated the courtyard, and a ginormous painting of Zeus covered the two floors of the atrium when we entered. There was even a mosaic floor depicting a scene from one of the Zeus moviesâat least I thought it did. Iâve never personally been a big fan of the Zeus franchise. It all seems a little samey, to me, in the sense that when youâve seen one, youâve seen them all. But I guess thatâs the whole point.
âCome in, come in,â said Sergio Sorbet once weâd made it past two security guards, one butler and one helpful personal assistant or PA, who appeared to have a tablet glued to his hand and an earpiece to his ear.
Sergio himself was a large man, and seemed to have been constructed entirely of muscle. He had a thick neck, brawny arms that stretched a Zeus T-shirt and bulging pectoral muscles that reminded me of that old Incredible Hulk TV series from the eighties, where Bill Bixby was always in danger of suddenly ripping his shirt to shreds and turning into Lou Ferrigno. They must have gone through an awful lot of shirts to film that particular series.
Sergio looked a little sweaty, but immediately explained this by stating that heâd been engaged in his second workout of the day, and a particularly grueling one at that.
âI shift tractor tires,â he said, as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.
âTractor tires?â asked Odelia.
âYeah. Best workout possible. Exercises chest, back, arm, leg muscles. Whole-body workout. But youâre not here to talk about my exercise regimen, are you?â He gave us the good-natured smile he was famous for, oozing charm from every sweaty pore.
âHave you heard about what happened to Joel Timperley, sir?â asked Chase.
The manâs face fell. âYeah, Luke told me. My PA,â he clarified. âTerrible business. Simply terrible. Have you arrested the man yet?â
âWhat man?â asked Chase.
âWhy, Dominic Careen, of course. He must be the one behind all this, right?â
âWhat makes you say that?â
âIsnât it obvious? That entire family has been pestering us for years. And now three of my friends are dead and youâre telling me you havenât picked him up yet? What are you waiting for, man?â
âWeâre waiting until we have solid evidence of Dominic Careenâs involvement,â said Chase. âAnd until we do, Iâm afraid our hands are tied.
