Here is the truth: if you are struggling with guilt regarding what someone else did to you, please ask God to take it from you. Set it at his feet. It is not your fault. If you told someone no and they didn’t honor what you asked, that is not your fault. You deserve respect, honor, and care. Please know that you did not deserve it and that what happened to you was wrong.

“My biggest struggle is that boys keep asking me to do things and I keep trying to say no.”

~Anna

SO NOW WHAT?

Whatever your experience—whether you were violated by a friend, a relative, or a stranger—you have to tell someone. Talk to a trusted adult, preferably a female. Choose someone who has her head on straight and loves you. Let her know what happened and let her love you through the sadness. It is sad. It is heartbreaking and demeaning and painful. This isn’t something you should brush off. Face it, talk with someone, and know that it’s okay to feel sad about this loss. That trusted friend can help you walk through the emotions. For those of you who experienced violence or rape, I’m so very sorry. I wish I had the ability to sweep in and wipe away the memory, the pain, and the heartache. What happened to you is horrible, and you have every right to feel angry, sad, and betrayed. If only there were an easy way to get to the other side of the hurt, but there just isn’t. As a result, you need someone to be with you through it all. Please talk with your parents, a pastor, or a good counselor. You’ll need Jesus with skin on to remind you of how beautiful you are as you get rid of the things that feel ugly inside.

THE NATURAL QUESTIONS

Why, God? The questions bubble up in frustration and anger. If God loves me and wanted to guard my purity, why would he allow someone to trample all over it? Why would a good God allow such a thing to happen?

There is no easy answer to that. We live in a broken world with people who have chosen against God in horrific ways. Evil is a part of our world. Bad things happen that we can’t explain or make sense of …

A few years ago I lost my dad in a sailing accident. He went out for his normal sail and fell off of his boat, while the boat kept going and left him behind. My dad drowned that day and the Coast Guard found his body four miles out in the ocean. We were shocked and heartbroken. My whole family gathered together to say their good-byes, holding each other and crying as my mom scattered his ashes into the water he loved so much.

Such a huge sudden loss … Why God?

Just twelve days later, the unthinkable happened again. My nephew Caleb, who had just been with us for my father’s funeral, fell asleep at the wheel on the way home from a church event.
