DAMIAN AND I LEAVE by nine since we have a late flight back to Atlanta. The flight is only an hour, and the mood is quiet and comfortable between us. When we arrive, he offers to drive my car back to the condo so I can close my eyes and let my mind drift for a while.
Things feel better between us now. I replay every word and detail of our conversation in the kitchen. Over and over again.
And Iâm hung up on one thing in particular. One thing that feels significant.
Iâm too confused to say anything about it, to ask the questions I need answers to. So when we get home, we bring our stuff in and say good night before going to our separate rooms.
He doesnât make a move on me tonight. Of course he doesnât. I told him very clearly not to.
He wonât make a move on me again.
But I canât help remembering something he said.
I take a short bath, hoping it will relax me, and then change into a champagne-colored silk gown and get ready for bed. I even get under the covers and turn out the lights. But I canât sleep.
My eyes keep popping open.
I finally canât stand it anymore. I climb out of bed and walk barefoot down the hall until I reach the closed door of Damianâs room.
I knock on it four times and wait.
It flies open in just a minute, revealing Damian wearing nothing but a pair of black boxer briefs and a question on his face. âClarke? Is everything all right?â
âYeah. Sorry. I hope I didnât wake you up.â My eyes drift down to his underwear, but I force them back up.
âNo. You didnât. Whatâs wrong?â
Now that the moment is here, I have no choice but to blurt it out. âDid you mean it?â
âDid I mean what?â
âDid you mean what you said before?â
âProbably. But baby, Iâm sorry. I donât know what youâre talking about.â He looks utterly baffled.
For some reason his confusion gives me courage. As does the endearment. âYou said you werenât being professional because Iâd asked you to be real. Did you mean it? Were you... were you being real? When you kissed me. Was that... was that just part of an act?â
âNo.â The word comes out softly. Hoarsely. He takes a step closer to me. âNo, it wasnât an act. I told you I never had sex unless I wanted it. It was real. I wanted to kiss you. I wanted to do more.â
âReally?â Thereâs a little bit of a squeak in my voice thatâs sadly unavoidable.
His gaze soft and questioning both, he reaches out toward me but then abruptly drops his hand. âYes. I wanted to. And I thought you wanted it too and that you were just nervous or uptight about taking the risk. Iâm sorry if I misread the signs. I donât usually make those kinds of mistakes. Iâm not sure what got into me. But I did want you. I do. And itâs completely fine if youâd rather not let things get messy.
